Philippine Airlines (PAL) is expanding its international network ahead of the year-end holiday season, with significant increases in capacity to Japan and additional services to Australia. The moves respond to sustained demand from both leisure travelers and the Filipino diaspora, as well as growing business and cultural ties between the Philippines and its key Asia-Pacific markets.

Japan Network Grows to 87 Weekly Flights

Starting in late October, PAL will increase frequencies on its core Japan routes. The Manila–Tokyo Narita and Manila–Osaka Kansai services will rise from 14 to 21 weekly flights each, while the Manila–Sapporo Chitose route will increase from three to five weekly rotations. These additions bring PAL’s total Japan operations to 87 weekly flights, offering more options for travelers during the busy winter period.

Richard Nuttall, President of Philippine Airlines, emphasized the strategic importance of the Japanese market. “By adding more flights, we are giving our customers greater flexibility during these high-demand months whilst strengthening tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between our two countries,” Nuttall said. The carrier’s expanded schedule also supports the Philippine government’s tourism targets and the growing number of Japanese visitors to the Philippines.

Australia Capacity Boost for Holiday Peak

In addition to the Japan expansion, PAL will operate extra flights to Australia on selected peak dates. The airline will increase capacity on its Melbourne and Perth routes, and deploy larger aircraft on services to Sydney and Brisbane. These enhancements are designed to accommodate the strong demand from Filipino communities in Australia and holidaymakers traveling during the Christmas and New Year period.

The additional Australia services complement PAL’s existing partnership with Qantas, which allows frequent flyer members to earn and redeem points across both networks. The airline is encouraging early bookings to secure preferred travel dates, as the peak season is expected to see high load factors.

PAL’s network expansion comes amid a broader recovery in Asia-Pacific aviation. The carrier has also been strengthening its North American presence, as reported in our coverage of its increased nonstop flights to Vancouver, Toronto, and New York. Meanwhile, other regional airlines are adding new routes, such as Vietnam Airlines’ new Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket service, further enhancing connectivity across ASEAN.

For travel professionals, PAL’s expanded Japan and Australia schedules offer more inventory for corporate accounts, tour operators, and leisure agents. The increased frequencies also provide greater flexibility for MICE groups and incentive travel planners looking to book during the peak season. With the airline’s modern fleet and growing network, PAL continues to position itself as a key player in the Asia-Pacific long-haul market.

The carrier’s focus on Japan and Australia aligns with broader trends in the region, where demand for premium and economy travel remains robust. As the holiday season approaches, PAL’s capacity additions are expected to help alleviate some of the pressure on airfares and seat availability, benefiting both passengers and the travel trade.
