Vietnam Airlines has launched its first nonstop service between Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and Phuket (HKT), a move that deepens air connectivity between southern Viet Nam and Thailand’s largest island destination. The inaugural flight, VN621, departed Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 16:00 on 2 July and arrived at Phuket International Airport at 17:50 local time, carrying 152 passengers aboard an Airbus A321.

The route operates four times per week and is the direct result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 28 May 2026 between Vietnam Airlines and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). That agreement coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Viet Nam, underscoring the strategic importance of bilateral tourism flows.

Inaugural Ceremony and Industry Reception

Upon arrival, the flight received a traditional water cannon salute, and passengers were greeted with floral garlands and commemorative gifts. Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and South Pacific, led the welcoming ceremony alongside representatives from Vietnam Airlines and Phuket International Airport.

“This inaugural flight shows how cooperation with Vietnam Airlines is converting air access into tangible travel opportunities,” said Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai.

The new link is expected to stimulate both leisure and business travel from southern Viet Nam to Phuket, which is one of Thailand’s premier resort destinations. It also strengthens intra-ASEAN connectivity at a time when regional tourism is rebounding strongly.

Familiarisation Trip and Marketing Campaign

To support the route’s commercial success, TAT’s Ho Chi Minh City Office is organising a familiarisation trip from 7 to 11 July for Vietnamese travel agents and media representatives. The initiative aims to showcase Phuket’s tourism offerings—ranging from beach resorts and cultural sites to MICE facilities—and to foster business connections between Vietnamese and Thai travel companies.

In parallel, TAT is promoting the “Thai Lan – Càng Hiểu Càng Yêu” campaign, which positions Thailand as a safe and value-led destination. The authority has set a target of 689,000 Vietnamese arrivals in 2026, a figure that the new direct air service is expected to help achieve.

Broader Context for Vietnam’s Aviation Growth

Vietnam Airlines’ expansion into Phuket comes as Viet Nam accelerates its airport infrastructure development to ease congestion and sustain tourism growth. Vietnam Accelerates Airport Expansion to Ease Gridlock and Sustain Tourism Growth highlights the government’s push to upgrade Tan Son Nhat and other key gateways, which will be critical as carriers add regional routes.

The new Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket service also complements other recent network moves in the region. For example, Air India Launches Easy Connect Hub-and-Spoke Service from Varanasi demonstrates how Asian carriers are refining their hub strategies to capture connecting traffic. Meanwhile, Banyan Group Launches Seasonal Vietnam Campaign Across Four Destinations shows how hospitality brands are aligning with airline route launches to drive package demand.

Implications for Travel Industry Stakeholders

For airline executives, the route represents a measured capacity addition in a high-demand leisure corridor. The four-weekly frequency allows for load-factor optimisation while offering enough seats to stimulate new demand. Hoteliers and tour operators in Phuket will benefit from a fresh source market that has historically relied on connecting flights via Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.

Travel agents in Viet Nam now have a direct product to sell, and TAT’s familiarisation trip will equip them with first-hand knowledge of Phuket’s resorts, activities, and MICE venues. The campaign’s emphasis on safety and value is likely to resonate with Vietnamese travellers, who have shown strong pent-up demand for international leisure travel.

From a competitive standpoint, the new service puts Vietnam Airlines in direct competition with low-cost carriers that already operate on the SGN–HKT sector. However, the full-service carrier’s product—including checked baggage, meals, and loyalty programme benefits—may appeal to premium leisure and corporate travellers.

The route also aligns with broader ASEAN tourism integration goals. As intra-regional travel recovers, direct links between secondary cities and resort hubs reduce travel time and cost, making multi-destination itineraries more feasible. For destination marketers, the Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket connection is a case study in how bilateral MOUs can be translated into tangible airlift and visitor growth.
