SunRay Social & Swim Club has made its second appearance at SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, after a successful first season in Koh Samui. The new outlet, operated by S Hotels & Resorts, shifts the traditional beach club model away from nightlife and toward a full daytime experience that tracks the sun from dawn to dusk.

The programming is built around the natural arc of the day. Mornings open with sunrise yoga and beach bootcamps, followed by Aqua Flow workouts and snorkelling during the Morning Drift window. As the sun climbs, Peak Sun brings mobile karaoke and pool games, while Golden Hour introduces beachside sports and family sandcastle contests. Evenings close with a Boduberu sunset ritual and live music performances.

Michael Marshall, CEO of S Hotels & Resorts, explained the concept’s adaptability: “The concept is built around the movement of the sun, but in the Maldives the ocean becomes an equally important guide.” That dual focus is reflected in the club’s water-centric activities and its location, just 15 minutes by speedboat from Malé International Airport.

Day-pass model opens to outside visitors

SunRay is accessible to both resort guests and day visitors, with day passes starting at $30. Meal packages and all-inclusive options are available, making it a viable add-on for travellers staying elsewhere in the Maldives or for those on a short stopover in Malé.

The culinary programme draws on Thai, Maldivian, and international influences, with handcrafted gelato and sun-inspired cocktails rounding out the menu. The club is part of the broader CROSSROADS Maldives development, which already includes a marina, retail, and dining options, and is designed to appeal to both local residents and international tourists.

For travel professionals, the launch underscores a growing trend in the Indian Ocean: repurposing resort amenities to attract non-resident traffic. Similar moves have been seen at other Maldivian properties, such as OZEN Collection’s personalised stays for Indian luxury travellers, and Patina Maldives’ expanded Perpetual Journey programme. The day-pass model also aligns with the Maldives’ push to diversify its tourism offering beyond traditional resort stays.

The SunRay concept first launched in Koh Samui, where it has been positioned as a daytime social hub. Its expansion to the Maldives follows S Hotels & Resorts’ strategy of rolling out branded lifestyle concepts across its portfolio. The company has not yet announced further locations, but the format appears scalable to other beachfront properties.

For agents and tour operators, the new club offers a practical option for clients who want a resort experience without a full overnight stay. The proximity to the airport also makes it a convenient add-on for travellers with long layovers or for those staying in guesthouses on nearby islands.

The move comes as the Maldives continues to see strong tourism demand, though the sector has faced recent headwinds, including a tax overhaul that sparked backlash among luxury operators. Still, new openings like SunRay suggest confidence in the destination’s long-term appeal.

With its focus on daytime leisure, SunRay Social & Swim Club is a clear departure from the typical beach club model. For hoteliers and destination managers, it offers a template for activating underused daytime hours and attracting a broader audience beyond overnight guests.
