The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has wrapped up two back-to-back initiatives aimed at positioning the kingdom as a leading surf-and-wellness destination for international travelers. The Amazing Thailand Surf & Wellness Journey and the Amazing Thailand x Insta360 creator itinerary brought media representatives and content creators from the UK, Australia, Japan, and other Asian markets to Phuket and Phang-nga in August.

Both programs are part of TAT's Healing Is the New Luxury campaign, which taps into a growing demand for travel that delivers physical, emotional, and mental benefits. The initiatives spotlight Thailand Surf Therapy, a concept developed under the Thailand Health Excellence 2026 strategy. It blends international surf therapy methodologies with science-based wellness principles, offering a structured approach to recovery and mindfulness.

Hands-on wellness in Khao Lak and beyond

From 8–13 August, participants in the Surf & Wellness Journey engaged in guided surf therapy sessions at Memories Surf House in Khao Lak, complemented by forest bathing and cultural immersion in local towns. The itinerary was designed to showcase how Thailand's natural environment can support mental and physical rejuvenation. Meanwhile, the Insta360 collaboration, running 8–12 August, involved 18 creators from across Asia who took part in similar wellness and cultural activities, capturing content for platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

The two groups converged on 9 August for The Wave of Healing networking dinner, an event that facilitated connections between international participants and Thai tourism stakeholders. Such gatherings are part of TAT's broader effort to build lasting relationships with global media and influencers, which can amplify the destination's visibility in key source markets.

Eurblarp Sriphiromya, Executive Director of TAT's Tourism Products Department, underscored the strategic intent: “Healing Is the New Luxury reflects a shift in what travellers increasingly value: meaningful experiences that reconnect them with nature, support their wellbeing and create lasting value.”

Scaling surf therapy as a tourism product

Thailand Surf Therapy is built on the “Take 5” framework, which emphasizes movement, reflection, and positive social interaction. The initiative is moving beyond concept stage, with practical visitor programs now in place, including a five-day Surf Therapy package in Khao Lak. TAT is also working with local operators to develop new wellness tourism products that can be marketed to both regional and long-haul travelers.

The push aligns with broader trends in the travel industry, where wellness tourism continues to outpace overall sector growth. For tour operators and travel agents, the emergence of structured surf therapy programs offers a new niche product that combines adventure, culture, and wellbeing—an appealing combination for clients seeking transformative experiences.

Thailand's efforts to diversify its tourism offerings come as the country targets higher-value segments. The recent push by hotel groups to attract Gulf travelers and the promotion of cultural festivals like Ubon Ratchathani's Candle Procession are part of the same strategy to broaden appeal beyond traditional sun-and-beach tourism.

For travel professionals, the key takeaway is that Thailand is actively building a reputation as a wellness hub, with surf therapy as a distinctive offering. As the concept gains traction, expect to see more packages and partnerships emerge, particularly in coastal destinations like Phuket and Phang-nga. The involvement of international media and creators suggests TAT is serious about reaching global audiences, and the content generated from these trips will likely influence travel decisions in the coming months.

With the global wellness tourism market projected to grow steadily, destinations that can offer authentic, science-backed programs will have a competitive edge. Thailand's surf therapy initiative, backed by government strategy and private-sector collaboration, positions the country well to capture a share of this demand.
