The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is positioning the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession as a global cultural attraction, using a Signature Thailand fam trip and a welcome reception to draw international attention to the northeastern region's most iconic festival. Held on 29 July 2026 at the Centara Ubon hotel, the event brought together 40 media representatives, influencers, and travel trade partners from 17 countries, offering them a first-hand look at the 125th edition of the procession.

Signature Thailand: From Experience to Inspiration

Under the theme “From Experience to Inspiration,” the reception followed the morning parade and underscored the procession's status as one of Thailand's three Signature Events. The evening's concept, “Healing is the New Luxury – Signature Thailand: Inspiring Journeys Beyond Expectations,” spotlighted the region's woven textiles, intricate candle artistry, and the Mekong-influenced lifestyle that defines Ubon Ratchathani and the broader Isan plateau.

Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, framed the initiative as a strategic move to shift tourism toward higher-value experiences. “By elevating this living heritage as a Signature Thailand Event, TAT is advancing Value over Volume through meaningful travel,” he said. The comment reflects a broader industry push to attract travellers seeking authentic cultural engagement rather than mass-market itineraries.

The fam trip, running from 25 to 31 July, includes visits to local attractions and hands-on experiences in Isan's gastronomy, textiles, and performing arts. The procession itself features 47 intricately carved candle sculptures and more than 37 dance processions, with TAT adding lighting installations, workshops, and performances to enhance the visitor experience.

Cultural diplomacy and regional appeal

The reception also featured a keynote by Weerasak Kowsurat, Chief Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, who reinforced the government's commitment to cultural tourism as a driver of regional economic growth. Experience stations at the event showcased Ubon Ratchathani's unique identity, from its traditional pha sin textiles to the craftsmanship behind the giant candles.

For travel professionals, the event signals a growing emphasis on secondary destinations in Thailand. Ubon Ratchathani, accessible via domestic flights from Bangkok and neighbouring countries, offers a distinct alternative to the country's beach resorts and northern hill towns. The TAT's push aligns with a wider trend of promoting year-round festivals, with upcoming highlights including the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026 and the Amazing Thailand Countdown.

The fam trip also serves as a platform for building trade relationships. By hosting agents and media from key source markets, TAT aims to create lasting partnerships that will drive future bookings to Isan. The region's appeal lies in its authenticity, and the Candle Procession provides a compelling reason for travellers to venture beyond the usual circuits.

As Thailand continues to position itself as a year-round destination, events like the Candle Procession are becoming key tools for destination marketing. The TAT's investment in media and trade familiarisation trips reflects a recognition that cultural tourism requires storytelling and personal experience to convert interest into bookings.

For hoteliers and tour operators, the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession offers a unique selling point for packages that combine cultural immersion with the region's natural and culinary attractions. The event's timing in late July also provides a summer travel option for international visitors, complementing the country's monsoon-season offerings.

With the global travel industry increasingly focused on sustainability and authentic experiences, TAT's approach to the Candle Procession serves as a model for other destinations looking to leverage cultural heritage. The emphasis on value over volume is not just a marketing slogan but a practical strategy for managing tourism's impact while enhancing visitor satisfaction.
