Tourism Malaysia and Alipay+, the unified wallet gateway operated by Ant International, have formalised a strategic partnership to accelerate the country's digital tourism transformation. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on 14 October 2026, outlines a framework for integrating seamless payment solutions, in-app digital engagement, and AI-driven travel services to elevate the visitor experience and support local businesses.

The collaboration arrives as Malaysia prepares for the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign, a national push to attract record international arrivals. By combining Tourism Malaysia's marketing reach with Alipay+'s global wallet ecosystem and artificial intelligence capabilities, the initiative aims to connect international travellers with local operators and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), encouraging spending beyond traditional tourist hubs such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi.

Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, underscored the role of digital technology in reshaping travel. "Digital technologies are transforming how travellers discover, plan, and experience destinations," he said. "This partnership supports our efforts to position Malaysia as a smart tourism destination, leveraging innovation to deliver richer experiences and broader economic benefits."

Building on Alipay+'s Malaysian footprint

The MoU builds on Alipay+'s established presence in Malaysia's digital commerce sector. In the first half of 2026, more than 600,000 merchants—predominantly SMEs—received payments through Alipay+ partner wallets, marking a 70% year-on-year increase. This growth reflects the rapid adoption of digital payments among Malaysian businesses, particularly in retail, food and beverage, and attractions.

Michael Guo, Alipay+ General Manager for Southeast Asia, South Asia, and ANZ, highlighted the role of AI in bridging travellers and destinations. "AI is transforming how travellers connect with destinations and businesses," Guo said. "By embedding intelligent services into digital wallets, we can create new opportunities for Malaysian enterprises to engage with a global audience."

A key component of the collaboration is Alipay+ Voyager, an AI travel agent integrated into participating digital wallets. Voyager offers personalised recommendations covering culture, cuisine, and experiential activities, helping travellers discover hidden gems and local favourites. The tool is designed to complement existing travel planning platforms, such as those offered by Fliggy's AI-driven hotel booking surge, which has shown the growing appetite for intelligent travel assistance.

In addition, Tourism Malaysia will introduce an AI-powered travel subsidy programme, providing travellers with benefits on accommodation and attractions. The programme aims to enhance visitor engagement and encourage longer stays, particularly in secondary destinations that have historically been overshadowed by major cities.

The partnership is expected to deliver tangible benefits for Malaysian businesses. Through exclusive campaigns and direct access to Alipay+'s global traveller base, SMEs can expand their reach without significant marketing investment. This aligns with broader industry trends, such as the record tourism gains in secondary cities driven by major events, highlighting the potential for digital tools to distribute visitor flows more evenly.

Industry observers note that the collaboration reflects a wider shift towards smart tourism, where data and AI play a central role in destination management. Similar initiatives, such as Agoda's dedicated digital storefront for Marina Bay Sands, demonstrate how travel platforms are deepening their integration with destinations to enhance the traveller journey.

For Malaysia, the partnership is a strategic move to leverage its position as a leading Southeast Asian destination. With the Visit Malaysia campaign on the horizon, the integration of digital payments and AI services is expected to improve the ease of travel, increase visitor satisfaction, and drive repeat visits. The initiative also supports the national goal of fostering a connected, inclusive commerce ecosystem that benefits both travellers and local enterprises.

As the MoU moves into implementation, both parties will focus on rolling out the AI-powered services and expanding merchant participation. The success of this collaboration could serve as a model for other destinations seeking to harness digital technology for tourism growth.
