Tourism Malaysia is stepping up its outreach to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) travellers, promoting a dense October calendar of international sporting events and cultural festivals. The campaign leverages improved air connectivity, including new Gulf Air flights from Manama, and visa facilitation to position Malaysia as a top choice for families, couples, and adventure seekers from the region.

Sports and culture headline the October lineup

The flagship draw is the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia (MotoGP) at Sepang International Circuit, running from 30 October to 1 November. Alongside it, National Sport Day 2026 takes place in Kuala Lumpur from 9 to 11 October, offering a multi-sport programme for visitors. Endurance runners can look to the KOKOL Ultra 2026 in Sabah, while the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta 2026 and The Heritage Ride Taiping 2026 add further variety.

Cultural programming is equally strong. The Borneo's Victoria Lion Dance Championship 2026 in Labuan and the Festival Gendang Sarawak at Kuching Waterfront showcase regional traditions. In Kuala Lumpur, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is hosting Tatreez: Reclaiming Palestine Through Embroidery, an exhibition that explores cultural identity through the lens of Palestinian craft.

For families, Malaysia offers a broad mix of urban attractions in Kuala Lumpur, beach resorts in Langkawi, and rainforest experiences in Sabah and Sarawak. The country's luxury resorts, shopping districts, and halal-friendly services are key selling points for GCC travellers.

Air connectivity and market strategy

Gulf Air's new nonstop service from Manama to Kuala Lumpur, launched earlier this year, complements existing routes operated by Emirates, Etihad Airways, and other carriers. This expanded capacity is expected to support inbound demand from the Gulf, particularly during the October events window.

Mohd Faharuddin Hatmin, Director of Tourism Malaysia Dubai Office, emphasised the destination's readiness to deliver memorable experiences for GCC visitors. "Malaysia's world-class events, vibrant festivals, and renowned hospitality make it an ideal choice for travellers from the region," he said in a statement.

The push aligns with broader efforts to deepen Malaysia's ties with the GCC market. Earlier this year, Tourism Malaysia partnered with Alipay+ on an AI-powered travel initiative aimed at enhancing the visitor experience for digital-savvy tourists. The October campaign builds on that momentum by pairing high-profile events with seamless payment and connectivity options.

For travel agents and tour operators in the Gulf, the October calendar offers a clear hook for package sales. The combination of MotoGP, cultural festivals, and family-friendly attractions provides multiple angles for tailored itineraries, from adrenaline-focused weekends to heritage and leisure breaks.

Malaysia's tourism board is also leveraging its presence at regional trade shows and roadshows to engage GCC buyers. The Dubai office, which covers the broader Middle East, is coordinating with airlines and hotel partners to ensure availability during peak event periods.

With the GCC outbound market showing resilience, Malaysia's October push is well timed. The destination's mix of modern infrastructure, cultural depth, and natural beauty continues to resonate with Gulf travellers, and the new air links make it easier than ever to visit.
