The Port of Dover closed its 2026 inaugural cruise season on 24 September with the arrival of Viking Mira, a four-month-old vessel completing a 12-night itinerary from Bergen to London. The call was the fifth and final inaugural visit of the year, capping a season in which the Kent gateway hosted 26 Viking Cruises sailings, with Viking Saturn concluding operations on 1 October.

Peter Wright, Head of Cruise at the Port of Dover, credited the partnership with Viking for driving a notable uptick in shore-side spending. More than 25,000 passengers explored local attractions during the season, a 30% increase over the previous year. “Many of the world's largest cruise lines are choosing to operate from here, reinforcing Dover's position as a leading UK cruise destination,” Wright said.

Expanding beyond the Mediterranean

Wendy Atkin-Smith, Managing Director of Viking UK, highlighted how Viking Mira's deployment reflects the line's strategy to broaden guest experiences beyond its traditional Mediterranean strongholds. “With its rich maritime history and spectacular views of the iconic White Cliffs, our guests always enjoy visiting Dover,” she noted.

Atkin-Smith also used the occasion to preview Viking Libra, the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, which is scheduled to call at Dover in 2027. The vessel represents a significant step in the cruise industry's push toward alternative fuels and lower-emission operations, a topic of growing interest among port authorities and itinerary planners alike.

Looking ahead, the Port of Dover anticipates 34 Viking calls in 2027 and 39 in 2028, a trajectory that underscores the port's rising status in Northern European cruise itineraries. The growth aligns with broader trends in the region, where operators are increasingly adding UK and Scandinavian departures to meet demand for shorter, culturally rich voyages.

For travel professionals, the expansion signals more capacity on routes that combine scenic coastal cruising with gateway cities like Bergen, London, and Dover. Agents and tour operators may find opportunities to package pre- and post-cruise stays, particularly as Viking continues to diversify its fleet and itineraries.

The port's performance also reflects a wider pattern of UK cruise hubs investing in infrastructure and partnerships to attract premium lines. As Holland America expands its Canada/New England season, similar dynamics are playing out across the Atlantic, with ports vying for a share of the growing expedition and luxury cruise market.

Viking's commitment to Dover comes amid a period of heightened geopolitical sensitivity in travel planning, with some seasoned travellers adjusting routes in response to global tensions. The stability and accessibility of UK ports like Dover offer a reassuring alternative for those seeking reliable, scenic itineraries.

As the cruise industry looks toward 2027, the debut of Viking Libra will be closely watched not only for its hydrogen propulsion but also for its potential to reshape port infrastructure requirements. Dover's forward booking numbers suggest that both the port and Viking are betting on sustained growth in the region.

For now, the final inaugural call of Viking Mira marks a milestone in Dover's evolution from a traditional ferry hub to a bona fide cruise destination, one that is increasingly on the radar of international operators and travellers alike.
