SriLankan Airlines has appointed Vipul Misra as acting chief executive officer, effective 9 September. Misra brings more than 20 years of experience in aircraft engineering and aviation leadership, having held senior roles at Air India, Vistara, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Kingfisher Airlines, and Air Deccan. His appointment signals a focus on technical and operational strength during this interim period.

Misra's career spans both full-service and low-cost carriers, giving him a broad perspective on airline economics and fleet management. At SriLankan, he will oversee the national carrier's efforts to improve performance, streamline operations, and position the airline for long-term sustainability in a competitive South Asian market.

Leadership transition at a critical time

The carrier, which operates a hub in Colombo (CMB) with routes across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, has faced financial and operational headwinds in recent years. Misra's appointment comes as SriLankan seeks to strengthen its market position and enhance service delivery. His engineering background is expected to be particularly valuable as the airline modernizes its fleet and optimizes maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities.

Industry observers note that Misra's experience with IndiGo, one of the world's largest low-cost carriers, could inform cost-efficiency initiatives, while his time at Vistara and Air India provides insight into premium service standards. This blend of operational rigor and customer focus may help SriLankan differentiate itself on key routes such as Colombo–London Heathrow, Colombo–Dubai, and Colombo–Singapore.

Stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact of Misra's leadership. "His deep understanding of aircraft engineering and airline operations will be instrumental as we navigate the challenges of the industry," said a SriLankan spokesperson. The airline has not indicated a timeline for a permanent CEO appointment, but Misra's interim role is seen as a strategic move to stabilize leadership.

Misra's appointment follows a series of executive changes across the region, including Tarun Seth taking the helm at Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, highlighting a broader trend of leadership transitions in travel. Meanwhile, other carriers are investing in technology, such as Austrian Airlines' Starlink rollout on its A320neo fleet, to enhance passenger experience.

For SriLankan, the immediate priorities include improving on-time performance, expanding codeshare partnerships, and leveraging its membership in the Oneworld alliance. Misra's technical expertise could also support the airline's efforts to reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions, aligning with industry-wide sustainability goals.

The airline's board expressed confidence in Misra's ability to drive the carrier forward. "We are confident that his leadership will bring a new level of operational excellence," said the board in a statement. As SriLankan embarks on this new chapter, the travel industry will be watching to see how Misra's strategies translate into tangible results.
