Virgin Atlantic has inaugurated a seasonal non-stop link between London Heathrow (LHR) and Phuket (HKT), adding a new option for UK travellers heading to Thailand's largest island during the northern winter. The first flight, VS214, touched down at Phuket International Airport on 19 October 2026, with the service running three times a week until 26 March 2027.
The route is part of a joint marketing initiative between Virgin Atlantic and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), aimed at attracting high-spending visitors from the UK. TAT Deputy Governor Chiravadee Khunsub said the new connection would help raise tourism receipts, noting that British visitors typically stay longer and spend more per trip than many other source markets.
Schedule and competitive landscape
Flights depart London Heathrow on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Phuket the following day. Return services leave Phuket on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The new route complements existing UK–Thailand services, with Thai Airways International and EVA Air already operating between London and Bangkok.
For travel professionals, the addition of a direct Heathrow–Phuket link removes the need for a Bangkok connection, potentially opening up new itineraries for leisure and MICE clients. Phuket's international airport has seen steady growth in long-haul traffic, and the winter season aligns with peak demand from the UK market.
TAT's London office has rolled out a promotional campaign to drive bookings on the route, reporting more than 9,000 reservations and significant audience reach. The UK remains one of Thailand's top tourism revenue generators, with over one million UK arrivals recorded in 2025.
Virgin Atlantic's move comes as the carrier continues to expand its network and digital capabilities. The airline recently rolled out NDC across UK trade channels, which could simplify booking and servicing for agents looking to sell the new Phuket route.
For hotels and resorts in Phuket, the seasonal service is expected to boost occupancy during the peak winter months. Properties such as the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa Merlin Beach have already introduced festive season programmes, anticipating increased demand from UK travellers.
The new route also aligns with broader trends in winter wellness travel, as seen in UNESCO spa towns positioning winter wellness travel, though Phuket's appeal lies in its beaches and tropical climate.
UK travellers are known for extended stays and diverse experiences across Thailand, from island hopping to cultural tours. The direct flight is expected to encourage more spontaneous and longer bookings, benefiting tour operators and destination management companies.
Virgin Atlantic's seasonal approach mirrors strategies used by other carriers to test demand on long-haul leisure routes without committing to year-round capacity. If load factors remain strong, the airline could consider extending the service or increasing frequency in future seasons.
For agents, the new route offers a straightforward way to package Phuket with other Thai destinations, leveraging the airline's connections from Heathrow. The joint campaign with TAT also provides marketing support that can be used in client communications.
As the winter season progresses, industry watchers will be monitoring performance data to gauge the route's viability beyond its initial run. For now, the service represents a significant addition to UK–Thailand air links.
