Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is set for a landmark $20 billion redevelopment, a project unveiled jointly by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) CEO Jack Potter and United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby at the White House. The initiative aims to elevate Dulles into a world-class international gateway while preserving the iconic terminal design by architect Eero Saarinen.
The transformation will deliver more than 5 million square feet of new or renovated space, with a focus on streamlining the passenger journey. Upgrades include modernized check-in areas, advanced security screening, and improved access to concourses and gates. The existing C and D concourses will be replaced by new facilities, offering expanded flight capacity, enhanced concessions, and seating equipped with charging stations and workspaces.
Key infrastructure upgrades
A centerpiece of the plan is the replacement of mobile lounges with an extended AeroTrain system, providing faster, more reliable connections between terminals. The international concourse will be modernized with direct access to larger Customs and Border Protection facilities, reducing wait times for arriving passengers. A state-of-the-art baggage handling system is also slated for installation, promising quicker luggage retrieval.
United Airlines, which operates a major hub at Dulles, will see significant benefits, including expanded lounge space and the creation of one of the largest United Polaris Lounges worldwide. This investment underscores United's long-term commitment to the airport, as noted by CEO Scott Kirby: "This project builds on our shared vision to deliver a world-class airport experience for our customers and employees."
Elliott L. Ferguson, II, President and CEO of Destination DC, emphasized the airport's role as the "front door" to Washington, DC. "This transformation will enhance global connectivity and support international visitation growth, positioning the capital region as a premier destination for business and leisure travelers," he said.
The first phase of the new Concourse E is scheduled to open later this year, adding 14 gates for United and new concession options. Upon full completion, the project will solidify Dulles International's status as the premier gateway to the nation's capital, a key development for the region's tourism and MICE sectors.
