The Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) has released the Six Principles for Responsible Retreats, establishing the first industry-wide benchmarks for the global retreat market. As the sector is expected to nearly double to $363.9 billion by 2032, the framework addresses a critical gap: until now, no shared standards existed to guide travelers or retreat organizers.

Dr. Sheri Rosenthal, chair of the WTA Retreat Committee and a retreat strategist with more than 25 years of experience, led the initiative. Having planned over 1,000 retreats globally, Rosenthal emphasized the need for responsible leadership. "As more people turn to retreats for personal growth and transformation, these principles provide a foundation for responsible leadership," she stated.

What the Principles Cover

The Six Principles for Responsible Retreats offer a practical checklist for consumers, helping them identify reputable offerings and avoid common pitfalls. For industry professionals—including hoteliers, tour operators, and travel agents—the standards encourage alignment around ethical practices, fostering greater transparency and trust.

The framework is particularly relevant for hospitality groups such as Six Senses, Chiva-Som, and Kurhotel Skodsborg, which already operate wellness-focused properties and retreats. It also applies to cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas Cruises, which recently announced Solara Wellness Decks debuting in 2026, and to destinations like Thailand, a leader in wellness tourism that hosted the BEING 2026 conference.

Travel agents and tour operators can use the principles to vet retreat offerings and advise clients more confidently. The standards also provide a benchmark for luxury travel advisors working with high-net-worth clients seeking transformative experiences.

Industry Context and Growth

The retreat market's rapid expansion has outpaced regulatory and quality frameworks, leaving consumers vulnerable to inconsistent experiences. The WTA's initiative aims to change that by creating a common language for responsible retreats. The principles cover areas such as transparency in pricing, qualifications of facilitators, safety protocols, and environmental sustainability.

Wellness tourism overall continues to grow, with destinations like Morocco positioning themselves as culinary and wellness hubs, and Antalya emerging as a MICE destination that also caters to wellness travelers. The WTA's standards could influence how these destinations market retreat packages.

For travel-tech vendors, the principles may spur development of booking platforms that highlight certified retreats, similar to how GDS systems like Amadeus and Sabre already filter for sustainability credentials.

Next Steps

The WTA will host a live Wellness Travel Talks conversation and Q&A on 29 July 2026, offering deeper insights into the framework. Industry professionals are encouraged to participate and provide feedback.

This initiative is expected to significantly impact the future of wellness travel, promoting a more organized and trustworthy retreat industry. As the sector matures, the Six Principles could become a standard reference for airlines, hotel groups, cruise lines, and tour operators alike.
