Ponant Explorations is seeing a shift in the profile of polar luxury travelers from India and Southeast Asia, with younger high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) and solo experiential travelers increasingly choosing expeditions aboard the icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot. Manish Sonar, Business Development Manager – India & SE Asia for Ponant, told Travelmao that while multi-generational families remain a core segment, the fastest-growing audience is now younger entrepreneurs and next-generation business leaders seeking transformative experiences in remote destinations.

Younger HNWIs Drive New Demand

“What is changing is not necessarily wealth, but motivation,” Sonar explained. “Over the last few years, we have seen growing interest from younger entrepreneurs, next-generation business leaders, successful professionals and solo travellers who are actively seeking transformative experiences in destinations that remain genuinely remote and difficult to access.” He noted that these travelers are less interested in traditional luxury markers and more in rarity, discovery, and personal achievement.

Sonar, who recently traveled aboard Le Commandant Charcot in East Greenland, observed that guests were drawn by opportunities to hike on sea ice, encounter wildlife in its natural habitat, engage with Inuit communities, and explore landscapes few people ever see. This aligns with broader luxury travel trends where travelers seek restoration, immersion, and meaningful stories rather than simply checking destinations off a list.

Multi-generational travel remains strong, but younger HNWIs and solo experiential travelers are becoming one of the fastest-growing audiences for polar exploration, particularly when adventure and luxury coexist seamlessly. Sonar emphasized that demand is no longer coming exclusively from traditional luxury cruise travelers; it now includes expedition enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, adventure seekers, and well-traveled repeat guests.

Custom Menus and Behavioral Sales Training

One of the biggest misconceptions about expedition travel is that guests must compromise on comfort or culinary expectations in remote regions. Across the Ponant fleet, the reality is quite the opposite. For travelers from India and Southeast Asia, dietary preferences such as vegetarian, vegan, or the specific practices observed by guests following Jainism are not viewed as special requests; they are an expected part of delivering world-class hospitality.

“Dietary preferences such as vegetarian, vegan or the specific dietary practices followed by guests observing Jainism are not viewed as special requests; they are an expected part of delivering a world-class hospitality experience,” Sonar said. Ponant has invested in high-end, tailored culinary options, including premium vegetarian and Jain menus, to cater to these guests even in polar environments.

To support travel advisors in hubs like Mumbai, Singapore, and Bangkok, Ponant has implemented behavioral sales training. “Education is absolutely critical in the polar expedition segment because Le Commandant Charcot is not a product that can be sold through brochures alone,” Sonar noted. The company conducts regular trade engagement through roadshows, destination workshops, webinars, and in-depth training sessions alongside preferred sales partners. Familiarisation trips are also used to immerse advisors in the experience.

Strategic collaborations with premium lifestyle and financial brands, including American Express, help Ponant engage affluent travelers through trusted channels while strengthening advisor knowledge. “The biggest opportunity today is helping partners move beyond demographic selling and towards behavioural selling,” Sonar added. “Understanding whether a traveller is seeking restoration, adventure, exclusivity, family connection or access allows advisors to identify the ideal polar journey far more effectively.”

Growth Targets and Market Outlook

India and Southeast Asia are becoming increasingly important source markets for Le Commandant Charcot. Sonar reported steady year-on-year growth from these regions, with demand broadening beyond traditional luxury cruise travelers. Over the next three years, Ponant’s objective is not just volume but quality growth, aiming to expand awareness of polar exploration while working closely with travel advisors and luxury travel designers to identify the right guests.

Sonar expects India and Southeast Asia to remain among the most dynamic growth markets for Le Commandant Charcot as awareness grows and more travelers seek extraordinary experiences. The trend mirrors broader shifts in luxury travel, where affluent travelers are increasingly confident in pursuing remote, experience-led destinations. For travel professionals, the key takeaway is that informed advisors create confident clients—essential when planning once-in-a-lifetime expeditions to some of the most remote places on Earth.
