Accor has taken its first step into the Finnish hospitality market with the signing of a franchise agreement for the ibis Styles Helsinki Helka. The 157-room property, slated to open in late 2027, will be housed in the historic Hotel Helka in Helsinki's Kamppi district, a hub known for its cultural venues and retail offerings.

The building, originally opened in 1928 by the YWCA of Finland as a safe haven for young women, was designed by Wivi Lönn, Finland's first female architect. It has operated as a hotel continuously since then and remains a landmark in the Finnish capital. Hotel Helka is recognized for its Finnish design aesthetic and its social mission, with profits supporting YWCA initiatives for women and girls.

As part of the ibis Styles brand, the hotel will blend creativity and local design while maintaining affordability and reliability. Amenities will include a breakfast restaurant, gender-specific saunas, and parking facilities. Guests will also have access to a nearby fitness centre.

Strategic entry into the Nordics

Yannick Wagner, Accor's Deputy Chief Development Officer for Europe and North Africa, highlighted the significance of the move: "This signing represents an important milestone for Accor as we enter Finland for the first time and continue to strengthen our presence in the Nordics."

Mikaela Pomrén, CEO of Hotelliyhtymä Oy and General Manager of Hotel Helka, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting the opportunity to preserve the hotel's heritage while gaining international visibility. "We are proud to join the ibis Styles family and to bring our unique Finnish design and social impact story to a global audience," she said.

The conversion is part of Accor's broader strategy to expand its midscale and economy brands across Europe. The group has been actively growing its portfolio, as seen in recent developments such as Accor's Fiji trio earning Ecotourism Australia certification and the expansion of its Accor+ Explorer subscription network.

Upon opening, ibis Styles Helsinki Helka will join Accor's ALL loyalty programme, giving members access to a global network of hotels and exclusive experiences. The property will also benefit from Accor's digital and distribution platforms, including its AI-driven ALL Concierge AI.

The move comes as Helsinki continues to attract international attention, with new air links such as Emirates' daily Dubai-Helsinki service on the A350 boosting connectivity. For travel professionals, the ibis Styles Helsinki Helka offers a new midscale option in a market that has seen limited international brand presence.

Accor's entry into Finland is expected to intensify competition among global hotel groups in the Nordics, a region known for its strong design heritage and sustainability focus. The ibis Styles brand, with its emphasis on local creativity, aligns well with Finnish aesthetics and values.

As the project moves forward, industry observers will watch how Accor integrates the historic property into its global network while maintaining the social mission that has defined Hotel Helka for nearly a century.
