Agoda's latest search-filter analysis reveals a clear shift among Asian travelers toward booking flexibility heading into 2026. The digital travel platform reports that free cancellation and pay-at-hotel options have entered the top 10 most-used search filters across the region, joining traditional preferences such as accommodation type.
Accommodation type remains the single most-used filter, accounting for 19% of all filter applications. However, the rise of flexibility-related filters signals that travelers increasingly want control over their plans before committing. Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President of Supply at Agoda, said: "Search filters can reveal what travellers want to know before they book, whether that's the right accommodation type, greater flexibility, or confidence in the quality of a stay."
What this means for hoteliers and OTAs
For accommodation providers, the data underscores the importance of offering flexible cancellation policies and localized payment methods. Properties that implement these options can reduce booking friction and boost guest confidence, according to Agoda. Accurate property categorization and comprehensive amenity tagging are also critical for visibility in search results.
Agoda recommends that properties tailor their offerings to match the search habits of their target markets. This could mean highlighting family-friendly facilities, included breakfasts, or proximity to public transport, depending on the audience. The platform, which lists over six million accommodations, continues to help partners capture high-intent interest through its integrated booking system.
The trend toward flexibility aligns with broader shifts in travel behavior. A separate Agoda survey on Gen Z loyalty found that younger travelers prioritize experiences and sustainability over traditional points-based programs, further emphasizing the need for adaptable booking options.
Industry players are also responding to changing consumer expectations. Millennium Hotels recently introduced bonus points for extended direct bookings, a move that rewards flexibility on both sides. Meanwhile, consumer groups in Beijing have called on airlines and OTAs to address overbooking, highlighting the growing demand for reliability and transparency.
Agoda's data suggests that flexibility is no longer a niche preference but a mainstream expectation. For travel professionals across airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators, adapting to this shift will be key to capturing demand in 2026 and beyond.
