Air Canada has confirmed a new seasonal route linking Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) with Ponta Delgada's João Paulo II Airport (PDL) in the Azores, beginning 12 June 2026. The carrier will operate three weekly rotations, offering travel professionals a fresh option for clients seeking direct access to Portugal's mid-Atlantic archipelago.
Flights are scheduled to depart Ponta Delgada on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with return services from Toronto on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The approximately six-hour block time positions the route as a competitive alternative to existing one-stop itineraries via Lisbon or other European hubs.
Strategic Hub Connectivity
The new service leverages Air Canada's Toronto hub to funnel passengers from across Canada, the United States, and South America. Toronto Pearson offers U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance, allowing travellers to clear U.S. immigration before departure and arrive as domestic passengers—a key selling point for American-bound itineraries.
Rocky Lo, Managing Director of International Sales at Air Canada, stated: “We are delighted to launch our new direct service between Ponta Delgada and Toronto, further strengthening the ties between the Azores, Portugal and Canada.” The executive highlighted the route's potential to stimulate both tourism and business travel between the regions.
The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, has seen growing interest from North American travellers drawn to its volcanic landscapes, whale-watching, and UNESCO-listed vineyards. The direct link eliminates the need for a connection in mainland Portugal, reducing total travel time for Canadian and U.S. visitors.
Aircraft and Cabin Configuration
Air Canada will deploy the Boeing 737 MAX 8 on the route, configured with 16 Premium Economy seats and 153 Economy seats. The aircraft's range and fuel efficiency make it well-suited for the transatlantic sector, which falls within the MAX 8's operational sweet spot.
Passengers enrolled in Aeroplan, Air Canada's loyalty programme, can earn and redeem points on the new service, including access to partner airlines within the Star Alliance network. This integration is particularly relevant for travel agents building multi-stop itineraries that combine the Azores with onward connections via Toronto.
The announcement was celebrated at a ceremony in Ponta Delgada attended by Portuguese government officials and representatives from the Azores tourism board. The region has been actively courting North American carriers, and this route marks a significant win for its tourism strategy.
For travel advisors, the new flights open opportunities to package Azores holidays with stopovers in Toronto or connections to other Canadian cities. The seasonal schedule—running through the summer peak—aligns with typical demand windows for European leisure travel.
Industry observers note that the route also strengthens Air Canada's position in the competitive Portugal market, where rivals like TAP Air Portugal and Azores Airlines have long dominated. The carrier already serves Lisbon and Porto from Toronto and Montreal, and the Ponta Delgada addition diversifies its Portuguese portfolio.
Travel professionals can find more details on Air Canada's agent portal, including commission structures and group booking policies. The route is now open for reservations through the GDS systems used by most North American agencies.
