Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to orchestrate a high-profile inauguration for the Bhogapuram International Airport, formally named the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport. The facility, built in a record 31 months, is scheduled to open on August 1 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the ceremony.
The greenfield airport is positioned as a catalyst for economic development in the North Andhra region, with expectations to improve air connectivity, generate employment, and stimulate tourism and commerce. Naidu described the airport as a source of pride for the Telugu people and called for a grand welcome featuring traditional Dhimsa and Kuchipudi dance performances. A Dhimsa dance involving a record number of participants is planned, aiming for a Guinness World Record.
Public outreach and development projects
To build momentum, the state government has launched a campaign titled "Wings to the Dreams of North Andhra," targeting women, youth, and students through outreach programs, quizzes, and competitions. Winners will attend the inauguration ceremony. The campaign will be promoted extensively on social media.
Following the airport's inauguration, Modi will lay foundation stones for various projects worth approximately $216 million (Rs 18,000 crore). His schedule includes arriving at the airport at 10:45 a.m., inaugurating the terminal at 10:58 a.m., and addressing a public meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. before departing for Delhi at 1:10 p.m.
For travel industry professionals, the Bhogapuram airport represents a new gateway for domestic and potentially international flights, which could reshape air travel patterns in the region. Airlines may consider adding routes to this airport, which is expected to serve as an alternative to the existing Visakhapatnam airport. The development also aligns with broader trends in Indian aviation, where state governments are investing in new airports to boost regional connectivity.
In related news, British Airways is expanding its transatlantic network, while Ontario International Airport reports record passenger numbers. The Bhogapuram launch underscores the growing importance of regional airports in India's aviation landscape.
