Thailand is preparing to host more than 15,000 delegates in Bangkok for the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, a major MICE event that promises to inject significant spending into the country's tourism and hospitality sectors. The meetings, scheduled for 12–18 October at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), will gather policymakers, economists, government representatives, private sector executives, and media from the institutions' 191 member countries.

A Return to the Global Stage

Often described as the “Olympics of Finance,” the event marks Thailand's return as host after first staging the Annual Meetings in 1991. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas emphasized the significance, noting that Thailand is only the third country outside the United States to host this gathering. “Hosting the Annual Meetings is expected to stimulate the economy, elevate Thailand’s global credibility and showcase the capabilities of local communities internationally,” he said.

The government has adopted the theme “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience,” aligned with the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP), a development framework promoting balanced, sustainable, and people-centred growth. This positioning is expected to resonate with global delegates and reinforce Thailand's reputation as a destination capable of hosting world-class events.

Soft Power on Display

Beyond the financial discussions, Thailand plans to leverage the event to showcase its cultural identity and soft power. The QSNCC will feature handwoven textiles from 21 provinces and 26 communities, comprising 37 heritage designs. Delegates will also be served Geographical Indication (GI) products, including premium 100% Thai Jasmine Rice, offering an authentic taste of the country's culinary heritage.

The “Road to Thailand” communication campaign is engaging government agencies, academic institutions, businesses, and the public in preparations. Youth, local communities, and small enterprises are being involved in the execution, ensuring the event benefits a broad cross-section of Thai society.

Meticulous Preparations

Thailand has organized its preparations through three dedicated subcommittees covering substance, protocol and logistics, and security. The Subcommittee on Protocol and Logistics is tasked with ensuring an exceptional experience for delegates, while the Subcommittee on Security aims to deliver a safe, orderly, and seamless event. “Thailand’s preparations are meticulous, down to the finest detail,” Ekniti said, adding that the country is “100% ready” to host the meetings.

Delegations from the IMF and World Bank Group are scheduled to visit Bangkok in July for their final evaluation, known as the “July Mission.” This visit will be a key milestone in the final countdown to the event.

Digital Finance and the Bangkok Blueprint

The meetings will also provide a platform for Thailand to present its experience in digital financial infrastructure, including PromptPay and Cross-Border QR Payments. Bank of Thailand Governor Vitai Ratanakorn said the central bank will showcase the concept of “Safe & Inclusive Digital Finance,” demonstrating that digital finance should be both fast and secure. As host central bank, the Bank of Thailand will introduce the “Bangkok Blueprint,” a policy framework developed in collaboration with the IMF and World Bank Group that countries can adapt to build trust in the digital financial era.

With thousands of international delegates arriving in Bangkok for the week-long gathering, Thailand aims to use the Annual Meetings not only to demonstrate its capacity to host a major global event but also to showcase its hospitality, local communities, and soft power to an international audience. This MICE win is expected to have lasting benefits for the country's tourism industry, building on recent momentum from initiatives like the expansion of air routes with Western China and domestic travel campaigns such as TAT and UOB Thailand's cashback initiative.
