Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, the North Malé Atoll resort, has unveiled its festive season programme for 2026-27, running from 22 December 2026 to 7 January 2027. Titled “The Secret Underwater Garden,” the initiative combines Maldivian cultural immersion with marine conservation and ocean adventures, aiming to offer guests a holiday experience that goes beyond the typical beach retreat.

Cultural activities and festive traditions

The programme opens with a series of festive activities designed to showcase local heritage. Guests can decorate Christmas trees alongside resident artist Abdullah, attend a beachfront lighting ceremony, and explore a recycled-wood Advent Calendar. Cultural offerings include Maldivian storytelling sessions, sarong workshops, and traditional Bodu Beru drum performances, providing an authentic taste of island life.

These cultural elements are part of a broader trend in the hospitality industry, where properties are increasingly integrating local experiences into their festive offerings. Similar initiatives have been seen at other resorts, such as Ritz-Carlton Bali's festive programme, which also emphasizes cultural immersion.

Marine conservation at the forefront

Marine conservation is a central pillar of the programme, led by the resort’s Marine Lab, the first of its kind in the Maldives. Guests can participate in coral planting, join Citizen Science snorkelling sessions, and attend marine talks. Younger visitors can enrol in the Junior Ocean Guardian programme, which introduces children to ocean conservation through interactive learning.

This focus on conservation aligns with the growing demand for sustainable travel experiences. As noted in a recent surge in dive tourism across Asia, travellers are increasingly seeking warm-water escapes that also offer meaningful environmental engagement.

Ocean adventures and signature experiences

For those seeking adventure, the programme includes dolphin cruises, sunset sailing, and lagoon excursions. Signature experiences such as the Masveriyaage Dhathuru: Fisherman Journey and the Kahan’bu sunrise cruise offer unique perspectives on Maldivian maritime traditions.

Dining and festive celebrations

Dining options feature Japanese cuisine at Madi Hiyaa and Thai dishes at Saffron, both highlighting local ingredients like coconut and fresh fish. Festive highlights include a beachfront Christmas Eve dinner and a New Year Gala Dinner on Naiboli Beach. Guests can also welcome the new year with a Year-End Gratitude Meditation and an island-to-island swim on 1 January. The programme concludes with an Orthodox Christmas Party on 7 January 2027.

Nightly rates start at US$1,300 per villa, positioning the resort as a premium festive destination. This pricing is consistent with other luxury Maldivian properties, such as Vakkaru Maldives' Silk Road festive season, which also targets high-end travellers.

For travel professionals, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru’s programme underscores the importance of offering differentiated, experience-led packages during the peak holiday period. As the industry moves toward more immersive travel, properties that integrate culture and conservation are likely to attract discerning guests seeking meaningful getaways.
