Bhutan Soul Travel (BST), the boutique operator founded by Louk Lennaerts, has returned to the market with a new product line, Bhutan À La Carte, designed to move beyond standard sightseeing packages. The relaunch follows a pandemic-forced pause and signals a strategic shift toward fully personalised journeys that reflect Bhutan's 'High Value, Low Volume' tourism policy.

Lennaerts, who also established the wellness-focused Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, said the new approach is a response to growing demand from travellers who want to engage with the kingdom on their own terms. 'Bhutan is not a destination that should be experienced from a checklist,' he said. 'It is a country that reveals itself slowly.'

Tailored itineraries across culture, wellness, and nature

Bhutan À La Carte allows clients to build trips around specific interests—whether that means exploring ancient monasteries in Paro, trekking the remote Himalayan trails in Bumthang, or taking part in local culinary traditions in Punakha. The operator says itineraries can be adjusted in real time, giving travellers the flexibility to change plans as they discover new interests during their stay.

The product is aimed at the discerning end of the market, with a focus on small groups and private travel. BST is working with a network of local guides and partners to ensure that each journey is both authentic and sustainable, in line with the kingdom's commitment to environmental preservation and cultural integrity.

Lennaerts emphasised that the slow-travel philosophy is central to the concept. 'We want visitors to connect with the rhythm of Bhutanese life, not just tick off landmarks,' he said. 'This is about creating a meaningful narrative for each traveller.'

The relaunch comes as Bhutan continues to refine its tourism model. The government has maintained a daily sustainable development fee (SDF) of US$100 per visitor, a policy that has reshaped the market toward higher-spending, lower-volume travel. BST's new offering is positioned to serve this segment, with bespoke itineraries that justify the premium price point.

Travel advisors and tour operators are expected to play a key role in distributing the new product. BST is offering commission structures and familiarisation trips for agents, and the operator is also exploring partnerships with luxury hotel groups and DMCs in the region.

Bhutan's broader tourism strategy has been evolving, with a recent push toward regenerative tourism that goes beyond carbon neutrality. BST's focus on slow, immersive travel aligns with this direction, and the operator says it is committed to supporting local communities through its itineraries.

For travellers seeking a more structured cultural experience, Bhutan also offers events like the Bathing Carnival in Pemagatshel, which returns in November 2026. BST can incorporate such festivals into bespoke itineraries, giving clients a chance to experience Bhutan's living traditions.

As BST resumes operations, it joins a growing list of operators offering tailored experiences in Asia. The trend is not limited to Bhutan—hotel groups like Conrad are expanding cultural itineraries across Asia Pacific, reflecting a broader industry shift toward personalisation.

With Bhutan À La Carte, Bhutan Soul Travel is betting that the kingdom's appeal lies in its ability to reward patience and curiosity. The operator's return is a signal that the high-value, low-volume model is gaining traction among specialist travel companies.
