The Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race will hold its 38th edition on 23 August 2026, with 2,500 swimmers from 78 countries expected to take part. The 6.5-kilometre course starts on the Asian shore and finishes on the European side, offering a rare intercontinental swim through one of the world's busiest maritime straits.

Recognised by the World Open Water Swimming Association as the "World's Best Open Water Swimming Event," the race has become a fixture in İstanbul's sporting calendar. It sits alongside the 2026 Women's European Volleyball Championship and the Tour of İstanbul, reinforcing the city's position as a host for international competitions.

Testing the currents

Participants will contend with the Bosphorus's powerful currents, which demand both physical endurance and tactical navigation. The race is not only a test of athletic ability but also a chance to experience the city's skyline from the water, with the historic silhouette of İstanbul as a backdrop.

For travel professionals, the event underscores İstanbul's broader appeal as a destination that blends heritage with modern infrastructure. The city's 2026 calendar includes concerts, cultural festivals, and other world-class events, providing reasons for visitors to extend their stay beyond the race weekend.

İstanbul's global connectivity and organisational capacity have made it a preferred venue for major sporting events. Looking ahead, the city is set to host the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix in 2027 and the 4th European Games, further cementing its reputation.

The race also highlights the growing trend of sports tourism, where events drive travel demand and showcase destinations to a global audience. For tour operators and agents, such events offer opportunities to package travel experiences around unique sporting spectacles.

As the city prepares for the 2026 race, the focus remains on delivering a seamless experience for athletes and spectators alike. The Bosphorus race, with its cross-continental route, remains a symbol of sport's ability to unite people across borders.
