The Cathay Group closed July 2026 with solid gains across both its passenger and cargo operations, reflecting sustained demand in key markets. Cathay Pacific and its low-cost subsidiary HK Express together carried approximately 3.5 million passengers during the month, a 9% increase compared with July 2025. Cargo volumes also advanced, with Cathay Cargo handling around 149,000 tonnes, up 6% year-on-year.

The group's passenger growth was led by Cathay Pacific, which reported a 9% rise in passenger numbers for July, while available seat kilometres (ASKs) expanded 5%. For the first seven months of 2026, Cathay Pacific's passenger traffic climbed 16% versus the same period last year. Lavinia Lau, Cathay's chief customer and commercial officer, attributed the performance to robust leisure travel, particularly long-haul demand from students and travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Cargo momentum continues

Cathay Cargo's July tonnage increase was driven by strong demand from Northeast and Southeast Asia, with the airline noting particular strength in exports from those regions. To meet ongoing demand, the carrier plans to expand freighter capacity to the Americas and on selected regional routes later this year. This aligns with the group's broader strategy to capitalise on e-commerce and time-sensitive shipments, a segment that has remained resilient despite broader economic headwinds.

The cargo uptick comes as Cathay Group navigates rising jet fuel costs, which the company attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Fuel remains a significant cost line for the airline, and the group will be watching geopolitical developments closely as it plans its winter schedule.

HK Express sees double-digit growth

HK Express, the group's low-cost carrier, carried around 760,000 passengers in July 2026, a 10% year-on-year increase. The airline's routes to Thailand and mainland China were particularly popular, with a new daily service to Wuxi receiving positive feedback from travellers. The carrier's expansion in the region underscores the group's dual-brand strategy, which allows it to serve both full-service and budget-conscious segments.

Looking ahead, Cathay Group anticipates continued strong demand for both passenger and cargo services. The airline's forward bookings for the remainder of the summer season remain healthy, and the group is optimistic about the second half of the year. This positive outlook is echoed in the group's first-half profit surge, which saw net income jump 71% on the back of robust travel demand.

The group's performance also reflects broader trends in the Asia-Pacific aviation market, where carriers are benefiting from the return of Chinese outbound travel and strong intra-regional flows. Cathay's focus on premium cabins and its expanding network to North America and Europe positions it well to capture high-yield traffic, while HK Express taps into price-sensitive leisure demand.

For travel professionals, the July figures offer a clear signal: demand for air travel remains buoyant, particularly in the long-haul leisure segment and in cargo. Cathay's ability to grow both passenger and cargo volumes simultaneously is a testament to its operational flexibility and network strength. As the group continues to add capacity and refine its route structure, it remains a key player to watch in the Asia-Pacific aviation landscape.
