China Airlines is rolling out a new Premium Economy cabin on its incoming Boeing 787 fleet, blending Taiwanese cultural motifs with upgraded hard and soft products. The carrier, which operates from its Taipei Taoyuan hub, aims to differentiate its mid-cabin offering on long-haul routes such as Taipei–Los Angeles, Taipei–San Francisco, and Taipei–Tokyo Narita.

Design Inspired by Jiufen's Nightscape

The cabin theme, dubbed “Starlit Mountain City,” takes cues from the illuminated hillside town of Jiufen. Seat covers feature a gradient pattern that shifts under ambient lighting to evoke twinkling city lights. Chrome accents and warm leather trim balance modern technology with a sense of home. The design language extends to the tray table, which uses China Airlines' signature persimmon wood-grain finish—a nod to Taiwanese symbolism of prosperity—and now doubles as a stand for phones and tablets with an anti-slip surface.

Each of the 28 seats is arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration, reducing the number of middle seats compared to standard economy. The seats include a six-way adjustable headrest and integrated side shielding for privacy. A leather footrest under the seat helps relieve pressure on long-haul sectors. Rose-gold reading lamps add a boutique-hotel ambiance.

4K Entertainment and Bluetooth Innovation

Every Premium Economy seat is equipped with a 15.6-inch 4K high-definition screen. China Airlines is introducing an industry-first Bluetooth system that allows passengers to pair their own wireless headphones and use their mobile device as a remote control for the in-flight entertainment system. This eliminates the need for wired headsets and lets travelers navigate menus more intuitively.

The airline has also upgraded the soft product to approach business-class standards. Amenities include lightweight porcelain tableware, individually wrapped napkins, two-tone blankets, slippers, and noise-reducing over-ear headphones. Complimentary Wi-Fi with browsing and messaging speeds aligned with business class is included. China Airlines partnered with Marc Jacobs and Danish skincare brand FRAMA for amenity kits, adding a fashion and wellness element.

As the Premium Economy segment continues to outpace first class in many markets, this product positions China Airlines to capture travelers seeking more comfort without the full business-class fare.

Preview at COMPUTEX 2026

China Airlines is showcasing the new seat at COMPUTEX 2026 in Taipei, in collaboration with TAITRA and GQ Taiwan. The COMPUTEX Service Lounge at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Hall 2 features real 787 Premium Economy seating, allowing exhibitors, international visitors, media, and staff to test the comfort and features first-hand. Daily themed workshops during the show will explore the airline's passenger and cargo philosophy.

The 787 Premium Economy cabin is expected to enter service on select long-haul routes later this year. Travel professionals can monitor route schedules via the airline's official website.
