China and Brunei have marked 35 years of diplomatic relations with a series of cultural exchange events, underscoring the deepening ties between the two nations. Organized by the China Intercontinental Communication Centre (CICC), the events included a performance by artists with disabilities and a food festival showcasing Beijing's halal cuisine.

Cultural performances bridge communities

On 18 and 19 September, the Jerudong International School theatre hosted "My Dream," a performance featuring 45 members of the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe alongside 20 local performers with disabilities. The event, attended by over 1,100 people, was supported by the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, Brunei's Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Brunei-China Friendship Association.

Chinese Ambassador Chen Shaochun emphasized the role of cultural exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. "These performances are a testament to the power of art to transcend barriers and bring people together," he said. The event highlighted the talents of disabled artists, promoting inclusivity and cultural appreciation.

Food festival brings Beijing flavors to Brunei

The Brunei China Food Festival 2026, launched on 20 September at Emperor's Court Restaurant, showcased the culinary expertise of master chefs from Donglaishun and Quanjude. These chefs demonstrated traditional techniques, such as hand-slicing lamb and roasting ducks, highlighting Beijing's halal cuisine. Ambassador Chen described food as a universal language, inviting guests to explore China's rich culinary heritage.

The festival is part of a broader effort to promote cultural tourism and culinary exchange, which are increasingly important in the region. Similar initiatives, such as cultural experiences at Taoyuan Airport, are gaining traction across Asia, reflecting a growing appetite for immersive travel.

Strategic partnership for future exchanges

In addition to the events, CICC and the Brunei-China Friendship Association signed a framework agreement to establish a long-term strategic partnership. This agreement aims to enhance cultural exchanges, youth programmes, and people-to-people interactions across ASEAN. Huang Jing, Director of CICC's Cultural Exchange Centre, expressed commitment to fostering closer ties between the people of China and Brunei through community-rooted cultural initiatives.

The partnership is expected to facilitate more frequent cultural exchanges, educational collaborations, and tourism promotion. As China continues to expand its cultural footprint in Southeast Asia, such agreements are likely to boost inbound tourism and strengthen regional connectivity. For travel professionals, this signals new opportunities in cultural tourism and MICE events, particularly in Brunei and the wider ASEAN region.

Brunei's tourism sector has been steadily growing, with a focus on eco-tourism and cultural experiences. The recent events are part of a broader strategy to position Brunei as a cultural destination. Similar efforts are being made across the region, such as Conrad Hotels' cultural itineraries, which highlight the importance of cultural offerings in attracting travelers.

For tour operators and agents, these developments present opportunities to design packages that include cultural performances, culinary tours, and community-based experiences. The emphasis on inclusivity and cultural exchange also aligns with global trends in responsible tourism.

As China and Brunei deepen their cultural ties, the travel industry stands to benefit from increased visitor flows and enhanced bilateral cooperation. The partnership between CICC and the Brunei-China Friendship Association is a model for how cultural diplomacy can drive tourism growth and mutual understanding.
