Cinnamon Box Office (CBO), the entertainment arm of Sri Lanka's John Keells Group, has introduced a Destination Event Calendar designed to elevate Colombo's status as a regional hub for culture and entertainment. The calendar's centerpiece is “This Is Michael – Relive the Legend,” a tribute to Michael Jackson scheduled for 8 and 9 November 2026 at The Podium, City of Dreams Sri Lanka.
The tribute show, which has gained international recognition for its authenticity, recreates the energy and spectacle of Jackson's live performances. Featuring a performer known for his striking resemblance to the King of Pop, the production includes iconic choreography, live music, and state-of-the-art visual effects. For travel professionals, the event represents a significant draw for leisure and MICE travellers seeking premium experiences in South Asia.
Strategic push for Sri Lanka's creative economy
CBO's initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Sri Lanka's creative economy by connecting local audiences with world-class productions. The platform has a track record of bringing international acts to the island, including West End productions such as “Mamma Mia the Musical” and culinary events featuring personalities like Nigella Lawson. This new calendar aims to build on that momentum, offering a curated mix of concerts, theatre, and lifestyle events throughout the year.
Dileep Mudadeniya, Senior Vice President at John Keells Group, said: “Cinnamon Box Office is more than a ticketing platform; it is an ecosystem that brings together entertainment, hospitality and tourism to create world-class experiences.” His comments underscore the group's ambition to integrate its hospitality assets with entertainment offerings, a model that has proven successful in other Asian markets.
Kamal Munasinghe, Senior Vice President at Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, added that City of Dreams Sri Lanka is set to become a focal point for hospitality and entertainment in the region. The integrated resort, which opened earlier this year, includes a casino, hotel rooms, and a 1,500-seat theatre, making it a key venue for large-scale events.
Partners and industry implications
The event is supported by partners including Seylan Bank, Imorich, and Million Laugh Entertainment. For travel agents and tour operators, the calendar offers new opportunities to package cultural experiences with hotel stays, particularly as Colombo gains more international air links. The city's growing appeal as a MICE destination is also reinforced by such initiatives, which provide compelling reasons for corporate groups to choose Sri Lanka.
Related developments in the region highlight the broader trend of integrated resorts and entertainment driving tourism. For instance, Cinnamon Hotels is targeting Indian growth as the Colombo resort gains new air connections, while Maharashtra's new convention bureau aims to boost MICE tourism in India. These moves reflect a competitive landscape where destinations are vying for high-spending travellers.
With the launch of its Destination Event Calendar, CBO aims to offer a diverse range of cultural and lifestyle experiences, reinforcing Colombo's status as a vibrant destination for creativity and innovation. For travel industry stakeholders, the calendar signals a shift towards more structured, year-round entertainment programming in Sri Lanka, which could help extend average stays and increase per-traveller spend.
