Cleartrip, the Flipkart-owned online travel agency, has introduced Book@0, a new service that allows travelers to reserve hotel rooms without making any upfront payment. Announced on 22 July 2026, the feature covers more than 700,000 domestic and international hotels, letting customers secure a booking without providing card details and pay only closer to their stay date.
How Book@0 Works
Book@0 addresses a common pain point for travelers who want to lock in a hotel and rate while their plans remain uncertain. By enabling reservations at zero cost, Cleartrip removes the financial commitment barrier, offering flexibility and peace of mind. Customers can confirm their booking and complete payment through the app within a specified period before their stay, with no cancellation fees or risk of losing the reservation.
Akhil Malik, Head of Hotels at Cleartrip, highlighted the service's appeal to Gen Z travelers who prefer planning without immediate financial pressure. "Book@0 is built for that mindset. It removes the last real barrier between a traveller and the hotel they want," he stated.
The service is particularly beneficial for leisure and international travelers, who often face financial losses due to last-minute changes. Book@0 is part of Cleartrip's broader strategy to democratize travel and enhance booking flexibility. Over the coming months, Cleartrip plans to introduce more products to simplify and improve the booking experience for Indian travelers.
Cleartrip, established in July 2006 and acquired by Flipkart in 2021, continues to innovate in the online travel sector, offering comprehensive travel solutions and maintaining its position as a leading online travel agency in India. The launch of Book@0 comes as travel demand rebounds, with many travelers seeking more flexible booking options. For travel agents and tour operators, this feature could reduce the friction of hotel bookings, especially for clients planning trips to destinations like Dubai, where last-minute changes are common. Dubai's RTA recently unveiled a five-year soft mobility plan to boost last-mile connectivity, which could further enhance the appeal of flexible hotel bookings in the emirate.
Similarly, the trend toward last-minute bookings is evident in other sectors. UK travelers are increasingly shifting to last-minute bookings due to economic and geopolitical pressures, a pattern that Book@0 could capitalize on. For luxury travel, the flexibility offered by Book@0 may also appeal to affluent travelers who value the ability to adjust plans without penalty. Oliver's Travels recently reported a surge in late luxury villa bookings, indicating a broader market shift toward flexible reservations.
Cleartrip's move aligns with similar initiatives in the travel industry, such as the growing popularity of pay-later options and flexible cancellation policies. By eliminating upfront payment, Book@0 could help Cleartrip differentiate itself in the competitive Indian online travel market, where rivals like MakeMyTrip and Yatra also offer various booking options. The service is expected to be particularly popular among younger travelers, who often prioritize flexibility over loyalty to a single brand.
As Cleartrip continues to expand its product offerings, the company aims to simplify the travel experience for Indian consumers, who are increasingly booking trips both domestically and internationally. With Book@0, Cleartrip is betting that removing financial barriers will encourage more spontaneous travel and help capture a larger share of the growing Indian outbound tourism market.
