Helsinki is deepening its commitment to design tourism with a major exhibition dedicated to the architectural legacy of Aino, Elissa, and Alvar Aalto. Opening 5 June 2026 at the Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki, Aalto Design – Shapes of Wellbeing examines how the Aaltos’ modernist work integrated emotional and physical comfort into the built environment. The exhibition arrives as 13 Aalto-designed buildings across Finland are proposed for UNESCO World Heritage listing, with a final decision expected from the World Heritage Committee in July 2026.

Curatorial Focus on Wellbeing and Modernism

Curated by Petteri Kummala and Jutta Tynkkynen, with adviser Carson Chan, the exhibition argues that the Aaltos advanced modernism beyond strict rationalism toward a more human-centric approach. “The work of the Aaltos was internationally influential in progressing modernism from strict rationalism to something more attuned to emotional and physical comfort,” Tynkkynen said. The show draws on the Aaltos’ furniture, glassware, and architectural models to illustrate how design can promote holistic wellbeing, balancing people, nature, and the built environment.

For travel professionals, the exhibition adds a new cultural anchor to Helsinki’s tourism offering. The city already draws design-conscious travellers from markets such as Japan, Germany, and the United States, and the Aalto exhibition could boost shoulder-season visits. Tour operators and travel agents may consider packaging the exhibition with stays at properties like the recently refurbished Finlandia Hall, which now includes short-stay flats furnished with original Aalto pieces.

Finlandia Hall Refurbishment and UNESCO Bid

Finlandia Hall, one of Alvar Aalto’s most iconic buildings, has undergone a refurbishment that includes a permanent exhibition on the Aaltos’ lives and work. The hall’s new short-stay flats blend modern classics with original Aalto furniture, offering a unique accommodation experience for design-focused travellers. Five Aalto buildings in Helsinki—including Finlandia Hall—are part of the UNESCO nomination. Jukka Savolainen, Museum Director at the Alvar Aalto Foundation, emphasised the broader significance: “The Aaltos’ work reflects the progressive values that brought about the Finnish welfare state.”

The UNESCO bid covers 13 buildings across Finland, from the Paimio Sanatorium to the Säynätsalo Town Hall. If successful, the listing would elevate Helsinki’s status as a design destination, potentially attracting more MICE and luxury travel business. Hoteliers and destination marketers should note that the nomination could drive media coverage and traveller interest, particularly among cultural tourists and architecture enthusiasts.

For travel agents and tour operators, the exhibition and UNESCO process offer a timely hook for custom itineraries. Helsinki’s accessibility via Finnair’s extensive Asian and European network—including direct routes from Tokyo Narita, Singapore, and New York JFK—makes it a viable stopover or standalone destination. The city’s design district, which includes the Architecture & Design Museum, already partners with local hotels and restaurants for curated experiences.

As the travel industry increasingly competes on experiential offerings, Helsinki’s Aalto programme demonstrates how cultural heritage can be leveraged to attract high-value visitors. The exhibition runs through late 2026, providing a multi-season window for promotion. Travel professionals should monitor the UNESCO decision in July 2026, as a successful listing would likely spur additional investment in design tourism infrastructure.
