Holland America Line is shifting its Caribbean strategy for the 2027–28 season, moving away from quick port calls toward longer, more immersive itineraries. The program, running from October 2027 through March 2028, includes 29 itineraries across 47 departures, visiting 35 ports in 25 countries and territories. This approach reflects a broader industry trend toward depth and personalization, appealing to travelers who value meaningful experiences over sheer volume.

Extended Stays and Curated Onshore Experiences

The season’s hallmark is extended port stays, allowing guests to engage more deeply with local culture, cuisine, and history. Shore excursions developed with The HISTORY Channel and “Meet the Makers” experiences provide authentic connections, while onboard programs like Destination Dining™ and the Global Fresh Fish Program extend the regional flavors. This shift from rushed itineraries to intentional travel aligns with evolving luxury expectations.

Nearly every sailing includes a call at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Holland America’s private island in the Bahamas. The island is being upgraded with a refined beach club offering waiter service and priority access, upgraded cabanas and villas, and novel touches such as Aperol spritz tricycles and Bacardi beach buggies. Activities range from horseback riding to quiet seaside retreats, balancing indulgence with laid-back Caribbean charm.

Oosterdam’s Caribbean Debut and Fleet Evolution

A key highlight is the debut of the reimagined Oosterdam in the Caribbean from December 2027, part of the brand’s Evolution investment. The ship introduces Solo Verandah staterooms with private balconies and expansive Bridgeview Suites with panoramic ocean views, catering to demand for privacy and space. New venues like the Grand Dutch Café add heritage and relaxed sophistication. Oosterdam will focus on longer Southern Caribbean and Panama Canal itineraries, targeting travelers seeking beyond-the-expected experiences.

The season’s diversity spans five- and six-day getaways to 9- and 12-day immersive sailings through the Southern Caribbean, the ABC islands, and partial Panama Canal transits. The standout is the 28-day Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage aboard Zuiderdam, tracing historic Clipper routes across 19 ports in 13 countries, blending iconic destinations with lesser-known gems.

For festive-season travelers, eight holiday cruises offer elegantly decorated ships, elevated dining, and global traditions, with late-night stays in San Juan and Christmas morning in Caribbean sunshine. This segment removes logistical burdens, allowing guests to celebrate effortlessly.

Holland America’s investment in the Caribbean aligns with its broader strategy, including the recent $70 million Denali Lodge upgrade for Alaska cruisetours. The cruise line continues to target luxury travelers seeking depth and ease, a trend also seen in the ultra-luxury segment, as Four Seasons Yachts expands its fleet.

With its blend of longer itineraries, curated experiences, and elevated onboard design, Holland America Line is delivering a Caribbean that feels both familiar and refreshingly new—a subtle but significant shift for the industry.
