Hurtigruten has returned MS Vesterålen to active service on the Norwegian coast following a renovation that blends modern comfort with a new onboard concept rooted in the company’s 133-year history. The ship, the smallest in the fleet with 133 cabins, now operates year-round on the Original Coastal Express route between Bergen and Kirkenes.
Heritage-Driven Refurbishment
The refurbishment touched 100 cabins and public areas, introducing Arctic Superior and Mini Suite categories while preserving the vessel’s original style and intimate atmosphere. CEO Hedda Felin described the relaunch as “living history with strong traditions being given a new life,” emphasizing that the ship offers a unique experience for both coastal residents and tourists.
André Pettersen, Chief Product and Hotel Operations Officer, noted that early guest feedback has been positive, with many highlighting “the special atmosphere on board and the combination of historical details and modern comfort.” He added that the renovation succeeded in maintaining Vesterålen’s character while elevating standards.
Onboard Heritage Elements
The heritage concept permeates the guest experience. The restaurant menu draws inspiration from recipes dating to the 1930s, and crew uniforms and tableware reference classic designs from Hurtigruten’s past. Historic artwork and tributes to generations of ships and crew are displayed throughout the ship.
Hurtigruten’s recent financial restructuring, including a €430 million refinancing deal with Nordic banks, provides a stable backdrop for this product investment. The company continues to position its coastal voyages as a core offering for travelers seeking authentic Norwegian experiences.
For travel professionals, MS Vesterålen represents a differentiated product in the expedition and coastal cruise segment. Its small size allows access to ports and fjords that larger ships cannot reach, and the heritage angle appeals to clients interested in cultural and historical travel. The ship’s year-round schedule offers consistent inventory for agents and tour operators.
As the cruise industry sees growing demand for immersive, small-ship experiences, Hurtigruten’s approach on Vesterålen could serve as a model for other operators. The integration of local history and design into the onboard product aligns with broader trends in experiential travel.
