Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India's largest hospitality operator by market share, has signed a new Ginger-branded property in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. The hotel will be created by converting an existing standalone property into a 50-key asset, marking the group's latest push into the Konkan coast leisure corridor.
Strategic expansion on the Konkan coast
Sindhudurg, located along Maharashtra's scenic Konkan coastline, has seen a steady uptick in visitor numbers thanks to better road and rail links from key source markets. Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President of Real Estate & Development at IHCL, noted that the area's accessibility from Mumbai, Pune, and Goa is a major draw. “This signing reflects our strategy of expanding the brand’s presence in high-potential destinations,” she said.
The new Ginger Sindhudurg will feature an all-day dining restaurant, a bar, a swimming pool, a gym, and dedicated spaces for corporate and social events. Priyanka Sawant, Director of Yash Inn And Resorts Private Limited, the conversion partner, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating it will help elevate Sindhudurg's tourism profile.
With this addition, IHCL will operate 66 hotels across Maharashtra, including 34 properties currently under development. The group's broader strategy includes deepening its footprint in coastal and emerging leisure markets, a segment that has gained momentum post-pandemic as domestic travellers seek drive-to destinations.
Sindhudurg is known for heritage landmarks such as the 17th-century Sindhudurg Fort and the white-sand beaches of Tarkarli. The region also offers water sports, dolphin-watching, and proximity to the Goa border, making it a versatile option for both leisure and MICE travellers. IHCL's Ginger brand, positioned as a mid-scale offering, targets cost-conscious business and leisure guests who still expect consistent quality and essential amenities.
The conversion model allows IHCL to expand faster without the capital intensity of ground-up construction, a tactic the group has employed in other high-growth corridors. This approach is similar to how other hospitality chains, such as Marriott's Fairfield by Marriott and Accor's ibis, have scaled in secondary Indian cities.
Industry observers note that the Konkan coast remains under-penetrated in terms of branded hotel supply, despite growing demand from weekend travellers and corporate offsites. IHCL's move could spur further interest from competitors, especially as regional airports like Sindhudurg's Chipi Airport expand connectivity. The property is expected to cater to both domestic leisure travellers and corporate groups seeking a coastal retreat within driving distance of major metros.
For travel agents and tour operators, the new Ginger property adds a reliable mid-scale option in a region that has traditionally been dominated by independent hotels and homestays. The brand's loyalty programme, Tata NeuPass, also offers cross-sell opportunities with other Tata Group businesses, including airlines and retail.
This signing comes as IHCL continues to broaden its portfolio across segments, from the luxury Taj and SeleQtions brands to the leaner Ginger and Vivanta lines. The group's focus on high-potential destinations aligns with broader industry trends in India, where domestic tourism is driving occupancy gains in emerging markets.
