IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed a management agreement for the Holiday Inn Resort Luang Prabang Naluang Hill, marking the group's debut in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, Laos. The 101-key property, slated to open in 2027, will be developed in partnership with Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited, expanding IHG's footprint in a destination known for its Buddhist temples, French colonial architecture, and natural attractions.

The resort will occupy a hillside position on Naluang Hill, offering panoramic views over the city and the Mekong River. It will be within easy reach of Luang Prabang's cultural landmarks, including Mount Phousi and the Kuang Si Falls, which have made the city a growing draw for leisure travellers from across Asia and beyond.

IHG's entry into Luang Prabang follows the group's existing presence in the Lao capital, Vientiane, where it operates two hotels. The new resort is part of a broader strategy to strengthen IHG's portfolio in Laos and capture demand from both leisure and corporate segments, particularly as the country ramps up tourism infrastructure.

Family-friendly and MICE amenities

The Holiday Inn Resort will bring the brand's family-oriented offerings to Luang Prabang, including the Kids Stay & Eat Free programme, which allows children to stay and dine at no extra cost. The property will also cater to the meetings and events market, with more than 500 square metres of flexible function space, making it one of the larger MICE venues in the city.

Additional facilities include four dining venues, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, and a spa. The resort's design will reflect local aesthetics, aiming to blend modern comfort with the cultural character of Luang Prabang.

Shi’ai Liang, IHG's Senior Director of Development for South East Asia & Korea, highlighted the destination's appeal: “Luang Prabang is a city rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty, and we see strong potential for both leisure and corporate travel. This signing underscores our commitment to expanding in Laos and offering guests the trusted Holiday Inn experience in one of the region's most enchanting settings.”

Chen Yichao, Director of Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are delighted to partner with IHG to create a resort that truly captures the unique spirit of Luang Prabang. With IHG's operational expertise and our local knowledge, we aim to deliver a world-class destination for travellers.”

The development aligns with broader trends in Southeast Asian hospitality, where international brands are increasingly targeting secondary cities with strong cultural appeal. Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-listed town, has seen steady growth in visitor numbers, driven by direct flights from regional hubs and a growing reputation as a luxury and wellness destination.

For travel professionals, the new resort adds a significant option for clients seeking a blend of heritage and modern amenities in Laos. The property's meeting space also positions it as a viable choice for incentive groups and corporate retreats, a segment that IHG is actively courting across its Southeast Asia portfolio.

IHG's expansion in Laos is part of a wider push in the region, which has seen the group sign multiple properties in Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. The company's recent moves include a management deal for a Bali property and the opening of Travelodge's largest Asia hotel in Seoul, reflecting a dynamic hospitality landscape across Asia.

As Luang Prabang continues to develop its tourism infrastructure, the arrival of an international brand like IHG is expected to raise the bar for service standards and attract a wider range of visitors. The resort's opening in 2027 will coincide with the city's ongoing efforts to balance tourism growth with heritage preservation, a challenge that many UNESCO destinations face.

For hoteliers and investors, the project signals confidence in Laos's long-term tourism potential, despite challenges such as limited air connectivity and infrastructure gaps. The partnership between IHG and Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited could pave the way for further international hotel developments in the country.
