InterContinental Halong Bay Resort, the first international luxury beachfront property in Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, is rolling out a trio of high-end offerings this June designed to shift the bay's positioning from a stopover to a standalone luxury destination. The move targets both domestic and international travelers seeking exclusivity and culinary sophistication.

Halong Bay Estate: Ultra-Privacy for Groups and Corporates

At the center of the new inventory is the Halong Bay Estate, a 565-square-metre six-bedroom villa that functions as a self-contained retreat. The villa includes a private cinema, an in-room spa, and an infinity pool. Guests can book a private chef and access a premium minibar, making the property suitable for multi-generational family gatherings or high-level corporate retreats. Rates start at $9,600 per night, inclusive of breakfast.

The villa's launch comes as branded residences and ultra-luxury accommodations gain traction across Southeast Asia. For context, a recent analysis of branded residences in the region shows that wellness and resort properties are leading demand among high-net-worth buyers.

Yulong Mansion: Cantonese Cuisine with Modern Techniques

The resort's new Cantonese restaurant, Yulong Mansion, is helmed by Head Chef Kan. The menu blends traditional Cantonese flavors with contemporary cooking methods, with signature dishes including 42-day pinewood-roasted Peking duck. The restaurant features four private dining rooms and is expected to draw diners from Hanoi and beyond, positioning the resort as a regional culinary destination.

Roku: Japanese Dining by Chef Andy Huynh

Chef Andy Huynh, formerly of Nobu, now leads Roku, the resort's Japanese restaurant and sky bar. The menu is built around six core culinary techniques, offering an authentic Japanese dining experience with a focus on precision and quality. The sky bar component adds a social element aimed at attracting both hotel guests and external visitors.

Grant Thompson, General Manager of InterContinental Halong Bay Resort, stated, “We are positioning Ha Long Bay not only as part of an itinerary, but as a standalone destination.” The comment underscores a broader industry trend: luxury resorts in emerging destinations are investing in high-capacity villas and destination dining to capture longer stays and higher spend per guest.

The resort's strategy mirrors moves by other luxury properties in Asia that are diversifying their guest mix. For instance, Maldives luxury resorts have similarly adjusted their marketing to attract new source markets amid regional disruptions.

With these additions, InterContinental Halong Bay is betting that a combination of extreme privacy, culinary excellence, and a strong brand name can elevate Ha Long Bay's profile among luxury travelers who might otherwise choose more established destinations. The resort's ability to attract corporate and family groups through the Halong Bay Estate could also open new MICE and incentive travel opportunities for the region.

Travel professionals—from tour operators to luxury travel advisors—should note that the property now offers a product capable of competing with standalone resort destinations in Southeast Asia, rather than merely serving as a one-night stop on a multi-city itinerary.
