Journey Beyond, Australia's experiential tourism group, has appointed Jo Boundy as managing director of its Resorts & Lodges division. Boundy, who previously served as chief marketing officer at both Qantas Group and Commonwealth Bank, will take up the role on 9 November, based in Sydney.

The appointment comes as Journey Beyond looks to expand its portfolio and sharpen the guest experience across its destination properties. Boundy's remit covers a collection that includes Ayers Rock Resort, Sal Salis, Monarto Safari Resort, and the soon-to-be-added Kgari Islands Kingfisher Bay Resort in Queensland.

Commercial and customer pedigree

Boundy brings a track record in customer strategy and commercial leadership from two of Australia's most recognised brands. At Qantas, she was responsible for marketing across the airline's domestic and international network, loyalty programs, and premium products. At Commonwealth Bank, she led customer engagement and brand strategy for one of the country's largest financial institutions.

Journey Beyond CEO Chris Tallent said the hire reflects the group's ambitions for its resorts and lodges. "Her deep commercial and customer experience expertise combined with her proven track record of driving growth and leading high-performing teams make her exceptionally well placed to strengthen our portfolio," Tallent said.

Boundy said she was eager to build on the properties' existing reputations. "I'm excited to join the business at such an important time and work with the team to further strengthen these iconic properties," she said.

Portfolio expansion and investment

The Resorts & Lodges division is a key growth pillar for Journey Beyond, which was formed in 2016 and also operates rail expeditions, cruise ventures, and guided tours. The group has been investing in its assets, including a A$5 million overhaul of Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef scheduled for completion in 2027.

The addition of Kingfisher Bay Resort on K'gari (Fraser Island) will expand the division's geographic reach and offer new opportunities for multi-day itineraries that combine coastal and outback experiences. Journey Beyond's rail products, such as the Ghan and Indian Pacific, already feed guests into Ayers Rock Resort, and the company is likely to cross-sell its new lodge offerings to those travellers.

Industry observers note that Boundy's experience in loyalty and customer data could help Journey Beyond deepen its direct-to-consumer channels and personalise packages for both domestic and international visitors. The group competes with other Australian experience providers, including Intrepid Travel and APT, but its owned-asset model gives it control over the full guest journey.

Boundy's appointment also signals a broader trend of travel companies recruiting senior executives from outside the sector to drive customer-centric transformation. Similar moves have been seen at Accor, which hired a former airline executive to lead its loyalty programme, and at Carnival Corporation, which brought in a tech veteran to oversee digital experience.

Journey Beyond's resorts are a significant draw for the luxury and adventure segments, with Ayers Rock Resort serving as the main accommodation hub for Uluru. The group has been working to position the resort as a cultural gateway, offering indigenous experiences and premium dining. Sal Salis, a tented camp on the Ningaloo Reef, targets high-end eco-travellers, while Monarto Safari Resort provides a wildlife-focused stay near Adelaide.

With Boundy at the helm, the division is expected to focus on operational excellence, guest personalisation, and strategic marketing. Her leadership will be closely watched by hoteliers and tour operators who see Journey Beyond as a bellwether for Australia's experiential travel market.

The appointment is effective immediately, and Boundy will report directly to Tallent. She succeeds the previous managing director, whose departure was not announced.
