Marriott International has confirmed plans to bring its JW Marriott luxury brand to Fiji, marking the company's first luxury resort in the Pacific Islands. The property, to be named JW Marriott Fiji Resort & Spa, will be developed on Denarau Island in partnership with Dubbo Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF).
Scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2027, with reservations opening in December 2026, the resort will be a conversion of the existing Westin Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, a well-known property in Fiji's hospitality landscape. The transformation aims to elevate Fiji's luxury travel segment by offering a mindful and holistic guest experience.
Resort features and accommodations
The JW Marriott Fiji Resort & Spa will comprise 282 rooms, including premium guestrooms, suites, and two-bedroom villas with private pools. Guests will have access to a large family pool and an adults-only pool with a poolside bar. Dining will feature a restaurant that blends global flavours with Pacific culinary traditions.
For meetings and events, the resort will offer a 309-square-metre ballroom and five meeting rooms, positioning it as a viable MICE destination in the South Pacific. The property will also cater to Marriott Bonvoy members and travellers seeking a restorative retreat on Denarau Island.
Rajeev Menon, President of Marriott International Asia Pacific Excluding China, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. "Fiji is one of the Pacific's most compelling resort destinations, and we are excited to work with Fiji National Provident Fund to introduce JW Marriott to the market," he said.
Viliame Vodonaivalu, CEO of Fiji National Provident Fund, highlighted the investment's significance, noting its potential to create long-term value for Fiji's economy and tourism industry. The project underscores FNPF's commitment to supporting high-quality tourism infrastructure in the country.
The move follows Marriott's recent expansion of its JW Marriott portfolio in the Asia-Pacific region, including the opening of a Spanish-style JW Marriott resort in Sanya. The Fiji property will add a distinct Pacific destination to the brand's growing footprint.
Denarau Island is already a hub for international tourism, hosting several major hotel brands. The conversion of the Westin property into a JW Marriott is expected to strengthen Marriott's presence in the region and attract high-end travellers from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
Industry observers note that the luxury resort market in the Pacific has seen steady growth, with brands like Marriott seeking to capitalise on increasing demand for upscale island experiences. The JW Marriott Fiji will compete with other high-end properties in the region, offering a unique blend of Fijian hospitality and global luxury standards.
Marriott's partnership with FNPF also reflects a broader trend of sovereign wealth funds and pension funds investing in tourism assets to diversify their portfolios and support national economic development. The project is expected to generate significant employment and ancillary business opportunities for local communities.
As the opening date approaches, travel professionals can anticipate a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in Fiji, with the JW Marriott brand's emphasis on wellness and mindfulness aligning with the island's natural appeal. The resort is poised to become a key player in the South Pacific's upscale travel market.
