Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air and Hanjin Group, has been named the 2026 Asia Airline Executive of the Year by CAPA – Centre for Aviation. The award was presented at the CAPA Airline Leader Summit Asia, held 1–2 October at New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, Japan. CAPA's annual awards recognize leaders who demonstrate strategic vision and measurable business impact.

Cho was singled out for his steady hand during the pandemic and for steering the complex integration of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. The consolidation is on track to produce a single, unified airline on 17 December, a milestone that will reshape South Korea's aviation landscape and strengthen the country's position in global air travel.

Leadership beyond the merger

Cho's influence extends well beyond the merger. He has served as Chairman of the SkyTeam Alliance Board and holds a seat on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Board of Governors, where he has been an advocate for sustainable aviation and industry collaboration.

Marco Navarria, Senior Director of Content & Marketing at CAPA, said: “We are delighted to recognise Walter Cho as our Asia Airline Executive of the Year. His visionary leadership has been transformative not only for the airline but for the region as a whole.”

During the summit, Cho took part in an interview, sharing insights on the strategic blueprint for the integrated carrier and the enhanced benefits passengers can expect. He also touched on the airline's plans for network expansion, including new routes and improved connectivity across Asia and beyond.

The award adds to a growing list of honors for Cho, including the Air Transport World Excellence in Leadership Award in 2023 and being named Korea Executive of the Year in 2024 by the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration.

For travel professionals, the Korean Air–Asiana merger is one of the most significant airline consolidations in recent years. The combined carrier will operate a fleet of over 200 aircraft, serving more than 170 international destinations. This scale is expected to enhance competition on key routes, particularly between Seoul and major hubs in the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Industry observers will be watching how the integration affects pricing, loyalty programs, and alliance dynamics. Korean Air is a founding member of SkyTeam, while Asiana has been part of Star Alliance. The unified airline will remain in SkyTeam, which could shift competitive balances in the region.

Cho's recognition comes at a time when Asian carriers are navigating rising fuel costs and changing travel demand. As jet fuel prices climb, airlines across the region are rethinking schedules and fares, making strong leadership more critical than ever.

Looking ahead, the new Korean Air will also focus on expanding its presence in emerging markets. The carrier has already announced plans to increase frequencies to India, following the lead of other Asian airlines like Philippine Airlines, which has added nonstops to Delhi and Mumbai. Such moves are part of a broader strategy to capture growing demand from the subcontinent.

Cho's leadership style has been described as hands-on and forward-looking. He has championed digital transformation and customer experience improvements, investing in new cabin products and in-flight connectivity. These efforts are expected to continue as the merged airline seeks to differentiate itself in a competitive market.

The CAPA award is a testament to Cho's ability to navigate complex challenges and deliver results. As the aviation industry emerges from the pandemic, his example offers a blueprint for other executives facing similar consolidation or recovery tasks.
