Loganair, the UK's largest regional airline by fleet size, has gone live with OpenAirlines' SkyBreathe platform, marking the first deployment of the fuel-efficiency system by a British regional carrier. The AI-powered analytics tool is now operational across Loganair's network of routes connecting Scotland, the Isles, and the wider UK, including city pairs such as Glasgow–Stornoway, Edinburgh–Kirkwall, and Manchester–Newquay.

AI-Driven Fuel Optimization for Regional Operations

SkyBreathe uses machine learning and big-data analysis to process flight data from each sector, generating actionable recommendations for pilots and ground teams. The platform identifies opportunities in areas such as optimized climb profiles, reduced engine taxi time, and more efficient descent planning. By joining a community of more than 80 carriers—including Air France, Korean Air, and easyJet—Loganair gains access to anonymized benchmarking and shared best practices.

Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah emphasized the strategic importance of fuel efficiency for a regional operator. “Fuel efficiency is not just a cost issue for a regional airline – it is central to our ability to keep connecting communities across Scotland and the wider UK in a way that's commercially sustainable and environmentally responsible,” he said.

The deployment aligns with Loganair's GreenSkies programme, launched in 2021, which targets net-zero emissions by 2040. The programme also includes fleet modernization with next-generation aircraft and a community fund supporting local sustainability projects. The airline operates a mix of ATR 72-600, Embraer 145, and DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft, all of which will benefit from SkyBreathe's tailored analytics.

OpenAirlines CEO Alexandre Feray noted that the partnership reflects a growing commitment among regional carriers to data-driven sustainability. “Loganair's decision to adopt SkyBreathe demonstrates that even smaller operators can leverage advanced analytics to reduce CO₂ emissions and operational costs,” Feray said. “We are proud to support their journey toward net zero.”

The technology is already delivering measurable results for other airlines. For example, Air France reported a 2-3% reduction in fuel consumption after implementing SkyBreathe, while Korean Air achieved similar savings on long-haul routes. For Loganair, even modest percentage gains translate into significant cost and carbon reductions given the high frequency of short sectors.

This move comes as the travel industry increasingly turns to AI to address sustainability challenges. In a related development, SITA acquired Big Blue Analytics to scale its AI disruption platform OCCam, highlighting the broader trend of airlines and airports adopting machine learning for operational efficiency.

Loganair's adoption of SkyBreathe also underscores the role of technology in regional aviation, where thin margins make fuel savings critical. The airline's network includes some of the UK's most remote communities, where air travel is a lifeline. By reducing fuel burn, Loganair not only cuts costs but also strengthens its license to operate in environmentally sensitive areas.

The platform's implementation was supported by OpenAirlines' team, which integrated SkyBreathe with Loganair's existing flight operations and data systems. Pilots receive pre-flight briefings with optimized flight plans, while post-flight analysis highlights deviations and further savings opportunities. The system also tracks CO₂ emissions in real time, providing a clear metric for the airline's sustainability reporting.

Industry observers note that regional carriers often face higher per-seat fuel costs than mainline operators, making efficiency tools particularly valuable. Loganair's move could encourage other regional airlines in Europe and beyond to follow suit, especially as regulators tighten emissions targets.

For travel professionals, the partnership signals a shift toward practical, data-backed sustainability measures that go beyond carbon offsets. As Amadeus launched an AI-powered travel advertising platform and Propellic reported inefficiencies in travel ad spend, the industry is clearly prioritizing technology that delivers measurable outcomes.

Loganair's GreenSkies Community Fund, which supports charities and small businesses in sustainability efforts, complements the operational gains from SkyBreathe. The airline expects the platform to contribute meaningfully to its 2040 net-zero goal while maintaining the reliability and frequency that its passengers depend on.
