Airbnb has released survey data that underscores a cultural trend among Malaysian travelers: a strong commitment to being respectful guests. The findings, drawn from a YouGov survey of 1,000 Malaysians who stayed in homestays over the past year, offer actionable insights for hoteliers, short-term rental operators, and travel agents catering to this market.

Key Findings on Guest Behavior

The survey reveals that 85% of Malaysian respondents view being a respectful homestay guest as highly important, with nine in ten rating themselves as good or excellent guests. This behavior is rooted in local values of respect and consideration, which translate into tangible actions: 66% of respondents go the extra mile by washing dishes, taking out rubbish, or leaving thank-you notes for hosts. During durian season, nearly 80% either ask permission, eat outside, or avoid bringing the fruit into shared spaces to prevent inconvenience.

Airbnb's internal data reinforces these patterns: over 97% of stays in Malaysia from March 2025 to March 2026 were completed without any complaints. Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb's Country Head for Southeast Asia and India, noted that "small acts of consideration and kindness" are natural traits for many Malaysians, enhancing the travel experience for both guests and hosts.

For travel professionals, these insights highlight a market segment that values mutual respect and low-maintenance interactions. This aligns with broader industry trends toward extended stays and deeper itineraries, as seen in programs like SeaDream Yacht Club's 2029 Caribbean season and Holland America Line's revamped Caribbean offerings.

To further encourage respectful travel, Airbnb has launched the Good Guest Guide, which provides tips for enjoying Malaysia while being a considerate guest. This initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of travel extend to the communities that welcome visitors, fostering a culture of respectful travel. For tour operators and agents, this guide can serve as a resource to educate clients on local etiquette, potentially reducing friction and enhancing guest satisfaction.

The survey's findings also resonate with the growing emphasis on community-centric travel. As destinations like Wan Chai position themselves as slow travel hubs, as seen with The Hari Hong Kong, understanding guest behavior becomes critical for property managers and hoteliers. Malaysian travelers' inclination toward respect and consideration could make them an ideal target for extended-stay programs and multi-brand loyalty initiatives, such as Hyatt's Brand Explorer Award.

For travel-tech vendors, the data underscores the importance of integrating guest behavior analytics into booking platforms. Platforms like Mindtrip Stays, which uses agentic AI to simplify hotel booking, could leverage such insights to match travelers with properties that align with their etiquette preferences. Similarly, GDS systems and booking engines might consider adding guest-rating features that highlight respectful behavior, benefiting both hosts and travelers.

In summary, the survey positions Malaysian travelers as a low-risk, high-value segment for the short-term rental and hospitality industries. Their natural inclination toward respect and consideration not only reduces operational headaches for hosts but also enhances the overall travel experience. As the industry continues to evolve toward more personalized and community-focused offerings, understanding these cultural nuances will be key to capturing this market.
