Maldivian, the national carrier of the Maldives, has rolled out Journey+, a new suite of optional services aimed at giving passengers more control over their travel experience. The programme, which launched on 5 October 2026, responds to growing demand for flexibility and personalisation in air travel, particularly among leisure and business travellers to the Indian Ocean archipelago.
Five services in the first phase
The initial phase of Journey+ comprises five distinct offerings. Journey+ Premier delivers priority check-in and baggage handling for domestic passengers, while international travellers also receive priority boarding. Journey+ Bags allows passengers to purchase additional baggage at preferential rates, a useful option for those travelling with diving equipment or shopping purchases. Journey+ Relax grants access to select Maldivian lounges, providing a more comfortable pre-flight experience. Journey+ Upgrade offers international passengers the chance to move to a higher cabin class on select flights, subject to availability. Finally, Journey+ Bites enables domestic passengers to pre-order onboard snack and beverage combos, ensuring a more satisfying in-flight experience.
Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian, commented: "Maldivian Journey+ has been developed around the evolving needs of our passengers and their desire for greater choice and flexibility when they travel with us." The airline sees this as a strategic move to differentiate itself in a competitive market where carriers such as SriLankan Airlines and Emirates operate alongside local competitors.
Distribution and future phases
Journey+ services can be purchased through multiple channels, including the Maldivian Call Centre, Viber, WhatsApp, and ticketing offices, up to 24 hours before departure. This multi-channel approach is designed to make it easy for passengers to add these services to their bookings, whether they are booking directly or through agents.
The launch marks the first phase of Journey+, with further services such as seat selection planned for Phase 2. This aligns with the airline's commitment to enhancing passenger experience and giving travellers more control over their journey. For travel professionals, this represents an opportunity to upsell ancillary services and tailor packages for clients heading to resorts like those operated by Patina Maldives, which is also expanding its own guest experiences.
Maldivian's move reflects a broader industry trend towards unbundling fares and offering à la carte options, similar to initiatives by other carriers. As the airline continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Journey+ develops and whether it will include more digital tools, potentially integrating with AI-driven corporate travel management platforms in the future.
For agents and tour operators, the new suite provides a clear way to enhance client satisfaction and generate additional revenue. By promoting Journey+ services, they can offer a more personalised experience, which is particularly valuable in the luxury travel segment where the Maldives is a key destination. The airline's focus on flexibility is likely to resonate with both leisure and business travellers, and the phased rollout suggests that more options are on the horizon.
As the Maldives continues to attract high-end tourism, with properties like Amansara and others expanding their offerings, Maldivian's investment in ancillary services positions it well to capture a larger share of the premium travel market. The airline's commitment to customer-focused travel is evident in this initiative, and it will be interesting to see how it impacts its competitive standing in the region.
