Mayfair Elixir, the growth-focused division of Mayfair Hotels & Resorts, has signed a management agreement for a new hospitality property in Santiniketan, West Bengal. This marks the group's fifth project in the state and reinforces its strategy of developing world-class accommodations in culturally significant Indian destinations.
Project Details and Timeline
The property, set amid the tranquil landscapes of Santiniketan, is designed to blend contemporary luxury with the area's rich cultural heritage. It will target discerning travelers, cultural enthusiasts, and those seeking authentic experiences. The project is expected to open in the financial year 2028-29.
Rajendra Chatterjee, CEO and Managing Director of Westroad Group, which owns the property, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. "Santiniketan is more than a destination. It is an emotion that celebrates creativity, learning, and Rabindranath Tagore’s legacy," he said. "Mayfair Group’s expertise and commitment to excellence made it the natural choice."
Strategic Importance
Randhir Gupta, Vice President of Commercial & Business Development at Mayfair Hotels & Resorts, highlighted the strategic importance of the signing. "Santiniketan has long been one of India’s most celebrated cultural destinations. Yet, the market has remained underserved in the premium hospitality segment," he noted.
Bjorn DeNiese, Managing Director of Mayfair Elixir, added that the project represents a significant chapter in the company's growth. "Our vision is not simply to add destinations, but to create hospitality experiences that celebrate the unique character and cultural identity of every place we enter," he stated.
The Santiniketan property is expected to enhance the region's global tourism appeal, furthering Mayfair Elixir's commitment to expanding its footprint in culturally rich destinations. This signing follows recent moves by other Indian hotel groups, such as ITC Hotels acquiring a 130-key Ahmedabad property and IHCL signing 20 hotels in Q1 FY2027, underscoring the growing competition in India's hospitality sector.
Market Context
Santiniketan, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its association with poet Rabindranath Tagore and Visva-Bharati University, has long attracted cultural tourists but lacked premium accommodation options. Mayfair Elixir's entry aims to fill that gap, potentially boosting the destination's appeal to international travelers and MICE groups.
The group's expansion in West Bengal aligns with broader trends in Indian hospitality, where domestic and international chains are increasingly targeting tier-2 and tier-3 cities with cultural significance. For travel professionals, this signals opportunities for new itineraries and partnerships in emerging destinations.
As the project moves toward its 2028-29 opening, industry watchers will be keen to see how Mayfair Elixir integrates local cultural elements into its design and service offerings, setting a benchmark for luxury in heritage-rich locations.
