The Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) is celebrating its ninth anniversary, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the global business events industry. Since opening in 2017, the Kuala Lumpur venue has hosted a diverse array of international trade shows, conferences, and exhibitions, connecting Malaysian industries with global markets.

MITEC's growth trajectory is underscored by its visitor numbers: 2.9 million attendees and more than 600 events in 2025, with projections of over 3 million visitors in 2026. The centre's calendar features flagship events such as Defence Services Asia, National Security Asia, and the Malaysian International Furniture Fair, demonstrating its capacity to serve sectors ranging from defence to design.

Recognition and industry impact

The venue's operational excellence has earned it the title of World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre at the World Travel Awards for three consecutive years. This accolade reflects MITEC's commitment to international service standards and its role in elevating Malaysia's profile as a MICE destination.

Datuk Azlan Shah Jaffril, Chairman of METCO Sdn Bhd, the centre's operator, highlighted MITEC's strategic importance: "MITEC represents Malaysia’s confidence and capability on the international stage." He emphasised the venue's role in fostering global partnerships and economic opportunities, a sentiment echoed by industry observers who see MITEC as a catalyst for business travel and trade.

The centre's success also aligns with broader trends in the MICE sector, where venues are increasingly focusing on sustainability and digital innovation. MITEC plans to designate September as its official Green Month, part of a broader push to enhance its environmental credentials. This initiative follows similar moves by other industry players, such as Sands China's recent ISO 14001 certification, signalling a growing emphasis on eco-conscious operations.

Looking ahead, MITEC aims to deepen its digital transformation, improving the attendee experience through technology. The venue's tenth year will be marked by continued investment in infrastructure and partnerships, with a focus on attracting high-value international events.

For travel professionals, MITEC's trajectory offers insights into the resilience of the MICE segment in Asia. As other destinations like Qatar position themselves for Indian corporate events, MITEC's sustained growth underscores the competitive landscape of global business tourism.

With its robust pipeline of events and strategic initiatives, MITEC is poised to remain a key player in the region's business events ecosystem, supporting Malaysia's economic ambitions and its integration into global trade networks.
