The NBA and Sands China have launched the NBA Cares x Sands Cares Community Impact Week 2026, a multi-day initiative designed to leverage basketball's popularity for community development in Macao. The program opened with a Tip-Off Day at The Venetian Arena, bringing together current players from the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, NBA legends, and hundreds of local students.

Around 400 participants, including school basketball teams from the Macao Inter-School Basketball Competition, took part in a basketball clinic and personal sharing sessions. Mavericks and Rockets players mentored students, offering insights into professional careers and the discipline required to succeed at the highest level. NBA legends Yao Ming and Shawn Marion also attended, sharing their own journeys and inspiring the next generation.

Patrick Dumont, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp. and chairman of Sands China Ltd., emphasized the broader significance of hosting international sporting events in Macao. "Their lasting significance lies in their ability to contribute to social progress and the development of the city," Dumont said during the opening ceremony.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reinforced the educational value of basketball, telling the assembled youth, "Basketball teaches teamwork, respect, and discipline... My message to all of you is to dream big."

The Impact Week, running from 7 to 11 October, includes a series of activities focused on youth development and community inclusion. Beyond the arena events, participants assembled goodie bags containing commemorative water bottles and sports wristbands for distribution across the community. On the following day, a School Day at Yuet Wah College will feature NBA legends engaging with students through basketball training sessions.

Strategic alignment with Macao's tourism push

The initiative comes as Macao continues to diversify its tourism offerings beyond gaming, with sports and entertainment playing an increasingly prominent role. The city recently hosted the Global Tourism Economy Forum, and the NBA China Games 2026, scheduled to take place in Macao, are expected to draw significant international attention.

Sands China's partnership with the NBA reflects a broader trend of integrated resort operators investing in community-focused events that also enhance their destination appeal. The company's Venetian Arena has become a key venue for major sporting and entertainment events, complementing its hospitality and MICE offerings.

For travel professionals, the Impact Week underscores the growing intersection of sports, tourism, and community engagement in Macao. The city's ability to host world-class events, combined with its expanding luxury hotel inventory and improved air connectivity, positions it as a competitive destination in the Asia-Pacific region.

As the NBA China Games approach, operators and agents may see increased demand for packages that combine game tickets with hotel stays and cultural experiences. The Impact Week's focus on youth and community also highlights the importance of corporate social responsibility in destination marketing, a factor that can influence traveler perceptions and booking decisions.

With the event running through mid-October, Macao's tourism stakeholders will be watching closely to gauge the ripple effects on visitor numbers and spending. The collaboration between the NBA and Sands China serves as a model for how sports partnerships can drive both social impact and economic benefits.
