Noto Satoyama Airport in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, is set to reopen on 7 July 2026 under a new identity: Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport. This makes it the only airport globally to carry the Pokémon name in an official capacity, a move designed to drive tourism and support regional recovery following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

The rebranding is the result of a collaboration between Ishikawa Prefecture and the Pokémon With You Foundation, an organisation that uses the Pokémon franchise to aid disaster-affected communities. The airport will feature extensive Pokémon-themed décor from the moment passengers arrive. The first-floor lobby will house a large-scale installation inspired by "Akarui Mirai - A Bright Future," with three-dimensional monuments of Pikachu, Plusle, and Minun. A giant Pikachu balloon will float above the second-floor atrium, surrounded by 111 Flying-type Pokémon figures.

Commercial and F&B Enhancements

The airport is not just about visuals. The second-floor gift shop, Serendipity, will sell exclusive Pokémon merchandise, while Restaurant Annon on the third floor will offer Pokémon-inspired dishes. The observation deck, renamed Pikachu no Satoyama, will feature a unique Pikachu landscape that reflects the region's identity. These additions are expected to appeal to both aviation enthusiasts and the broader family travel market, potentially increasing dwell time and ancillary revenue.

In mid-July 2026, two Pokémon-themed shuttle buses will begin operations, connecting the airport with local attractions such as the Wakura Pokémon Footbath and the Nymphia with LOVE monument. The buses will run on weekends and public holidays, excluding winter, providing a seamless link between air travel and ground experiences. This integrated approach mirrors strategies seen at other airports, such as Sydney Airport's recent partnership with Travelex to enhance passenger services.

The initiative underscores a broader trend in destination marketing where intellectual property partnerships are used to differentiate airports and stimulate tourism. For travel professionals, this represents a case study in how airports can leverage pop culture to attract niche audiences, particularly in regions recovering from natural disasters. The Pokémon brand has a massive global following, and its application at Noto Satoyama could serve as a model for other airports seeking to diversify their appeal beyond traditional transit functions.

From an operational perspective, the airport's transformation may also influence airline route planning. While Noto Satoyama currently serves domestic routes, the enhanced facilities could attract international charter flights or seasonal services from carriers looking to tap into the Pokémon tourism market. Themed airports have proven successful in other contexts—for instance, the Hello Kitty-themed check-in counters at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport have drawn significant passenger interest.

The project also aligns with broader recovery efforts in Ishikawa Prefecture. The 2024 earthquake caused substantial damage to infrastructure and tourism, and the Pokémon partnership is part of a multi-pronged strategy to rebuild visitor numbers. Similar post-disaster tourism campaigns have been implemented in other regions, such as the use of mascots and themed events in Kumamoto after the 2016 earthquakes.

For hoteliers and tour operators in the Noto region, the airport rebranding offers new marketing angles. Packages combining flights, Pokémon-themed ground transport, and stays at local ryokan or hotels could appeal to families and collectors. The Wakura Pokémon Footbath, for example, is a free footbath facility decorated with Pokémon characters, which could become a must-visit for fans.

Travel agents and tour operators should note that the airport's transformation is scheduled to coincide with the summer travel season, a peak period for Japanese domestic tourism. Early booking incentives and bundled experiences could drive demand. The initiative also highlights the growing importance of experiential travel, where the journey itself becomes part of the destination experience.

In summary, Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport is more than a novelty; it is a strategic investment in tourism recovery and place branding. For industry stakeholders, it offers lessons in leveraging intellectual property, integrating ground transport, and creating memorable passenger experiences that extend beyond the terminal.
