Sydney Airport has appointed Travelex as its exclusive foreign exchange and ATM services provider, bringing the global currency brand back to Australia’s busiest gateway after a ten-year hiatus. The agreement, effective 1 July, will see Travelex operate 10 retail locations at Terminal 1 International and deploy more than 20 ATMs across all terminals, offering both Australian dollars and foreign currencies.

The partnership follows a competitive tender process designed to modernise the airport’s financial services offering. Mark Zaouk, Sydney Airport Group Executive Commercial, said the move reflects shifting traveller expectations. “We’re pleased to welcome Travelex as our new foreign exchange partner, bringing a broader and more integrated approach that reflects the evolving needs of today’s traveller,” Zaouk stated.

Digital and Multi-Currency Capabilities

Travelex will provide access to over 50 foreign currencies through online pre-order or in-store purchase. Passengers can also use the Travelex Travel Money Card, a prepaid card that holds up to 10 currencies simultaneously. The company has invested heavily in digital capabilities, including a revamped online platform and enhanced customer service processes.

Asokan Sathurayar, Travelex Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, noted the significance of the contract during Travelex’s 50th anniversary year. “Securing this contract is a strong endorsement of our customer proposition and reflects our continued commitment to providing convenient, secure and reliable travel money services,” he said. Sathurayar added, “We’ve made significant investments in our product offering, digital capabilities and customer service experience, and we’re excited to launch our enhanced services at Sydney Airport.”

The deal underscores a broader trend of airports seeking to upgrade ancillary revenue streams through technology-driven partnerships. Sydney Airport, which handled over 44 million passengers in 2019 before the pandemic, is positioning itself for a full recovery in international traffic, particularly on long-haul routes such as Qantas’s planned nonstop Sydney–London flights and the Project Sunrise A350-1000ULR cabin.

Travelex’s return to Sydney Airport also aligns with the growing importance of multi-channel travel money solutions. As international travel rebounds, airports are increasingly looking to offer seamless digital experiences that complement physical retail. The partnership is expected to benefit not only leisure travellers but also business and MICE segments, where currency flexibility and convenience are critical.

Industry observers note that the contract could serve as a template for other major Australian airports. Travelex already operates at several other gateways in the region, and its renewed presence at Sydney strengthens its position in the Asia-Pacific travel money market.

The announcement comes as the travel industry continues to adapt to post-pandemic consumer behaviour, with a marked shift toward contactless and pre-booked services. Sydney Airport’s decision to partner with a single provider for both foreign exchange and ATMs aims to simplify the passenger experience while driving operational efficiencies.
