Qatar Airways is set to restore its Canberra service from 8 December 2026, marking the final piece in the carrier's post-disruption Australia network rebuild. The route, operating via Melbourne, will initially run four times weekly before ramping up to daily frequencies from March 2027.

The Doha-based carrier will deploy its Boeing 777-300ER on the Canberra rotation, a configuration that includes business and first-class cabins. Flight QR989 departs Canberra at 12:30pm, arriving in Doha the same evening, while the return leg, QR988, leaves Doha at 8:25am and touches down in Canberra at 8:30am the following day.

Network Completion and Competitive Implications

With Canberra back in the schedule, Qatar Airways now serves six Australian gateways: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra. This reinstatement follows a period of suspended services linked to regional geopolitical tensions and subsequent diplomatic adjustments. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's recent easing of travel advice for Qatar has added a layer of reassurance for corporate and leisure travellers considering the route.

For travel industry professionals, the restored Canberra connection means increased capacity into the Australian Capital Territory, a market that has historically relied on connections via Sydney or Melbourne for long-haul departures. The direct Doha link via Melbourne provides a streamlined option for government, education, and business travel segments, as well as luxury leisure itineraries.

Hamad International Airport, Qatar's hub, offers onward connectivity to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia via the airline's award-winning transfer experience. The premium cabin product remains a key differentiator for high-yield passengers, with Qatar's business and first-class seats consistently ranking among the industry's best.

The timing of the resumption aligns with broader capacity increases across the Australia-Asia corridor. Philippine Airlines has also boosted Australia capacity for the peak season, reflecting a wider trend of carriers rebuilding networks in the region.

Luxury and Business Travel Implications

For luxury travel advisors and corporate booking teams, the restored Canberra service offers a premium alternative to existing options. The Boeing 777-300ER's cabin configuration includes lie-flat seats in business and private suites in first, with onboard dining and service standards that appeal to discerning clients.

The route's schedule is designed to facilitate same-day connections in Doha, with arrival times that align with evening departures to European and Middle Eastern destinations. This efficiency is particularly relevant for time-sensitive corporate travellers and those planning multi-stop luxury itineraries.

Qatar Airways' return to Canberra also introduces competitive pressure on the Australia-Europe premium market, where carriers such as Emirates, Etihad, and Singapore Airlines operate. The increased frequency across six Australian ports gives travel agents more flexibility in constructing itineraries that maximise stopover options and loyalty program benefits.

For the MICE sector, the restored link opens up Canberra as a viable departure point for incentive groups and corporate events in Doha and beyond. Major conventions like the Lions International Convention returning to Hong Kong demonstrate the ongoing demand for accessible long-haul connections from secondary Australian cities.

Travel agents and tour operators should note that the service will be bookable through all major GDS systems, including Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport, with Qatar Airways' QR code. The airline's partnership with Oneworld alliance members also provides interline and codeshare opportunities for complex itineraries.

As the Australian travel market continues to recover, the restoration of Canberra-Doha services signals confidence in the region's long-term demand for premium air travel. For professionals advising clients on luxury and business travel from the ACT, the new schedule offers a compelling option that combines award-winning service with strategic connectivity.
