Radisson Hotel Group has marked a significant step in sustainable hospitality with the opening of Radisson Safari Hoedspruit in South Africa's Limpopo province, the continent's first property to achieve Verified Net Zero status. The 138-room hotel, situated near Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon, operates entirely on renewable electricity and has electrified its operations to cut fossil fuel dependency.

The property's energy mix combines on-site solar generation with renewable electricity sourced from the national grid. Electric kitchen equipment and an electric vehicle fleet further reduce emissions. The hotel also treats and recycles all wastewater, while local partners handle waste separation and recycling. Composting and worm farming support a zero-waste ambition, and guests are encouraged to participate through towel reuse and flexible housekeeping options.

Carbon-labelled dining and responsible sourcing

Radisson has partnered with food sustainability platform Klimato to introduce carbon-labelled menus, allowing guests to make informed dining choices and guiding the culinary team toward lower-carbon options. The hotel also repurposes used coffee bags into reusable shopping bags, demonstrating a commitment to circular practices.

Tim Cordon, Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia Pacific at Radisson, highlighted the importance of launching the Verified Net Zero programme in Africa, noting the natural surroundings are central to the guest experience. Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability & Security Officer, stressed the hotel's comprehensive approach to reducing its carbon footprint, with verification by TÜV Rheinland.

The launch aligns with Radisson's broader sustainability strategy, which targets 100 Verified Net Zero hotels by 2030. It also serves as a model for how existing hotels can transition to net zero without compromising guest comfort or service standards.

Radisson's expansion in Africa continues alongside other developments, such as the new jungle resort at Tadoba tiger reserve in India, reflecting the group's focus on nature-based hospitality. The company has also extended its Manchester Airport lease to 2035, underscoring its commitment to key travel hubs.

For travel professionals, Radisson Safari Hoedspruit offers a case study in sustainable operations that can be replicated across the industry. The hotel's verified status provides a credible benchmark for eco-conscious travellers and corporate clients seeking measurable sustainability credentials.
