Dorchester Collection has named Richard Cooke as the new general manager of Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, effective January 1, 2027. Cooke arrives from Rocco Forte Hotels, where he served as managing director for the UK and Northern Europe, with oversight of Brown’s Hotel in London and properties across Belgium and Germany.

Cooke’s career spans more than three decades in luxury hospitality, including senior leadership roles at Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts in Asia and Canada. His early background was in food and beverage management with Four Seasons, Regent Hotels, Ritz-Carlton, and Rosewood across the United States. Born in the UK, he completed a general manager programme at Singapore Management University and pursued executive education at the Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality.

A custodian for a storied property

Philippe Leboeuf, CEO of Dorchester Collection, welcomed the appointment, saying, “Richard’s warmth, cosmopolitan perspective and instinct for truly meaningful hospitality make him exceptionally well placed to lead this special hotel.”

Hotel Bel-Air sits on 12 acres of canyon gardens, offering a secluded retreat minutes from Beverly Hills and Hollywood. The property recently earned a Michelin Guide three-key rating, one of only two hotels in Los Angeles to receive that distinction.

Cooke expressed his enthusiasm: “To be Hotel Bel-Air’s next custodian fills me with pride and excitement and it’s a true honour to join Dorchester Collection.” He looks forward to leading the team and contributing to the hotel’s legacy.

The appointment underscores a broader trend of leadership moves across the luxury hospitality sector. Similar transitions include Conrad Hong Kong’s new general manager and St. Regis Punta Mita’s new leader, reflecting the industry’s focus on experienced operators to maintain service standards.

Cooke’s international background—spanning Asia, Canada, Europe, and the US—positions him well for the global clientele that Hotel Bel-Air attracts. His operational expertise in both standalone luxury properties and multi-brand portfolios will be key as the hotel continues to compete in the high-end Los Angeles market.

As luxury travel evolves, properties like Hotel Bel-Air are investing in leadership that can balance tradition with innovation. The hotel’s Michelin recognition adds to its appeal, and Cooke’s culinary background may further enhance the dining experience.

Dorchester Collection operates a portfolio of iconic hotels, including The Dorchester in London, Le Meurice in Paris, and The Beverly Hills Hotel. The group’s emphasis on personalised service aligns with Cooke’s stated approach to hospitality.

Cooke’s appointment also reflects the ongoing demand for seasoned executives in the luxury segment, as seen in other recent moves such as Cap Maison Resort & Spa’s new GM and Grand Hyatt Bali’s new hotel manager.

With his track record and international perspective, Cooke is expected to maintain Hotel Bel-Air’s reputation as a top-tier destination for discerning travellers.
