Riu Hotels & Resorts has reopened the Riu Touareg on Boa Vista island in Cape Verde, completing a comprehensive renovation that repositions the property as a family-centric all-inclusive resort. The 5-star, 24-hour all-inclusive hotel, located in the island's south, now offers redesigned guest rooms, new dining concepts, and expanded leisure amenities aimed at multi-generational travellers.
Room redesign and family focus
All 1,181 guest rooms have been fully refurbished with contemporary furnishings, updated bathrooms, and modern climate control systems. The resort now delivers a unified family experience, with the exception of a dedicated quiet pool reserved for adults, ensuring a balance between lively family zones and tranquil retreats.
The renovation underscores Riu's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Cape Verde archipelago, where it now operates six properties across Sal and Boa Vista. This investment reflects the group's commitment to maintaining quality and innovation in its international portfolio, particularly in emerging sun-and-beach destinations.
Dining upgrades
Dining options have been significantly expanded. The main restaurant, Morabeza, now features a larger indoor, climate-controlled area. The Asian restaurant Kabuki has been relocated to increase capacity, while the Kulinarium restaurant has been enlarged. The former snack venue has been converted into the Bereber steakhouse, and a new American Country sports bar serves classic American dishes. Guests can also enjoy the Candy ice cream parlour and two new Pepes Food grill stations.
These culinary enhancements align with broader industry trends where resorts are investing in diverse F&B offerings to appeal to international travellers. Similar moves have been seen across the hospitality sector, such as S Hotels & Resorts introducing new dining concepts in the Maldives.
Leisure and entertainment
Entertainment and common areas have also been upgraded. The gym has been expanded, and the RIU Fit and RIU Land programmes have been updated. The spa has been renovated, and the playground enlarged. The three main pools have been remodelled, with expanded solariums.
The resort's family-oriented positioning is part of a wider trend among hotel groups to cater to multi-generational travel. For instance, Atlantis Dubai has announced similar upgrades across its Palm resorts to enhance family experiences.
RIU's investment in Cape Verde also comes as destinations worldwide face climate-related challenges. The archipelago's coastal resorts are not immune to such risks, and operators are increasingly focusing on resilience. As noted in recent industry reports on climate risks and power resilience, sustainable infrastructure is becoming a priority for resort operators.
The Riu Touareg's reopening is expected to bolster Boa Vista's appeal as a family destination, complementing the island's existing tourism infrastructure. With its expanded facilities and enhanced dining, the resort aims to capture a larger share of the European family market, particularly from the UK, Germany, and Portugal, which are key source markets for Cape Verde.
Travel agents and tour operators can expect increased demand for the property, especially during school holidays. The resort's all-inclusive model, combined with its family amenities, positions it well for the growing trend of hassle-free family holidays.
RIU's continued investment in Cape Verde signals confidence in the destination's long-term tourism potential. As the group expands its footprint, it remains focused on delivering consistent quality across its international properties, a strategy that has made it a leading player in the all-inclusive resort segment.
