S Hotels & Resorts has introduced its SunRay Social & Swim Club concept to the Indian Ocean, opening the lifestyle brand at SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton. The move extends the group's new daytime leisure proposition beyond its initial soft launch at SAii Koh Samui Villas earlier this year, with a third location slated for SAii Laguna Phuket in late 2026.

Unlike conventional beach clubs that lean heavily on nightlife, SunRay is built around daytime activities, dining, wellness and music. At SAii Lagoon, the concept has been tailored to the resort's waterfront setting and its access to the lagoon, integrating water-based experiences into the daily schedule.

Programming from sunrise to sunset

The daily programme is divided into four periods — First Light, Morning Drift, Peak Sun and Golden Hour — allowing the resort to cater to families, couples and groups rather than a single beach-club audience. First Light features sunrise yoga and beach bootcamps, while Morning Drift shifts to water activities such as Aqua Flow workouts, floating pickleball, snorkelling and diving.

Peak Sun introduces mobile karaoke, water polo and pool volleyball, alongside creative pursuits like water painting. Golden Hour brings beach table tennis, volleyball, padel clinics and Kick Box Fit sessions, plus sandcastle competitions aimed at younger guests.

Local culture is woven into the experience: a Boduberu performance accompanies sunset, and evening entertainment rotates between live bands, acoustic sessions and DJ-led events. The programming is designed to keep guests engaged and spending throughout the day, while also opening the resort to non-resident visitors.

F&B as a core pillar

Food and beverage is central to the SunRay format. The Maldives menu blends local, Thai and international influences, with dishes such as breadfruit crisps with Maldivian tuna mix, crispy tortilla with stir-fried beef kaprao, Phuket lobster arancini and Maldivian-style pizza. The menu is structured around shareable plates suited to poolside and beach dining.

SunRay also introduces a gelato range tied to its visual identity, with flavours including Orange Amaretto, Toffee and Pink Guava, alongside a curated cocktail list.

“What makes SunRay so compelling is its ability to adapt to the character of each destination,” said Michael Marshall, CEO of S Hotels & Resorts. “The concept is built around the movement of the sun, but in the Maldives the ocean becomes an equally important guide. At SunRay Maldives, the programme has been shaped around the lagoon itself, from water-based activities and wellness experiences to music, dining and social moments.”

Marshall emphasised that the Maldives version has its own identity while retaining SunRay's focus on nature-led daytime leisure.

Expanding the day-visitor market

The launch also extends SAii Lagoon's commercial reach beyond overnight guests. SunRay operates within CROSSROADS Maldives, an integrated resort destination about 15 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. CROSSROADS combines three resorts with a 30-berth marina and a range of restaurants, entertainment and leisure facilities.

Its proximity to Malé opens access to a broader day-visitor market, including travellers staying elsewhere in the Maldives and residents seeking resort experiences without an overnight booking. SunRay Day Passes are priced from USD 30 net per adult, including facility access and a 30% discount on food and beverages, including the Gelato Bar. Meal Packages start at USD 75, while all-inclusive packages begin at USD 140. Children aged seven and under enter free, and round-trip speedboat transfers are included.

For the Maldives resort sector, where operators are increasingly looking beyond room rates to grow ancillary revenue, SunRay consolidates dining, wellness, activities and entertainment into a single daytime proposition. The concept is designed to be adapted rather than replicated across destinations — Koh Samui provided the starting point, the Maldives version leans into its lagoon setting, and Phuket will offer the next test when it reaches SAii Laguna Phuket later this year.

As S Hotels & Resorts continues to roll out SunRay, the brand could become a template for other hospitality groups seeking to monetise daytime leisure.
