Riyadh Air has officially entered Southeast Asia with the launch of its inaugural nonstop service between Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur. The route, which began operations this week, marks the Saudi carrier's first destination in the region and a key step in its global expansion strategy.
The new service operates three times weekly between King Khalid International Airport (RUH) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). It is expected to serve business travelers, tourists, and students, while also supporting growing trade and investment flows between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, one of ASEAN's most important aviation hubs.
A strategic gateway to ASEAN
Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas described the launch as a defining moment for the airline's expansion into Southeast Asia. "This route is more than a connection between two capital cities," he said. "It is a strategic gateway between Saudi Arabia and the wider ASEAN region, supporting Vision 2030 through stronger business, tourism, and educational ties."
The carrier, which is positioning itself as a digitally led premium airline, plans to use Kuala Lumpur as a springboard for further regional growth. Industry analysts note that the move aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader push to diversify its economy and increase international air connectivity.
For Malaysia Airports, the arrival of Riyadh Air is a significant win. The carrier becomes the ninth Middle Eastern airline to serve Kuala Lumpur, reinforcing the airport's status as a regional hub. Dato' Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, said the new service "enhances connectivity with a region of growing importance for tourism, trade, and investment." He added that it gives travelers more choice and strengthens KUL's role as a gateway between Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.
The Riyadh-Kuala Lumpur route also complements existing Gulf carrier services, including those operated by Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, which connect Malaysia to the Middle East and beyond. However, Riyadh Air's entry brings a fresh Saudi-focused option, particularly for pilgrims and business travelers heading to the Kingdom.
Malaysia has long been a key partner for Saudi Arabia, with strong people-to-people ties and significant trade volumes. The new flights are expected to boost tourism in both directions, with Malaysian travelers gaining easier access to Saudi Arabia's emerging leisure and business destinations, and Saudis exploring Malaysia's diverse attractions.
Riyadh Air's expansion comes amid a broader transformation of Saudi aviation. The Kingdom is investing heavily in its airports and carriers as part of Vision 2030, aiming to become a global aviation hub. The airline, which launched operations in 2023, has already announced orders for dozens of widebody aircraft and plans to serve more than 100 destinations by 2030.
For travel professionals, the new route opens up opportunities in both markets. Tour operators and agents can now package Saudi-Malaysia itineraries, while corporate travel managers gain a direct link between two key business centers. The service also adds capacity on a route that has seen growing demand from both leisure and religious travel segments.
As Riyadh Air continues to build its network, industry watchers will be looking for the next Southeast Asian destination. Speculation has centered on Jakarta, Bangkok, and Singapore, all of which are major markets with strong ties to the Gulf. For now, Kuala Lumpur serves as the airline's beachhead in the region, and the early signs are positive.
