Riyadh Air, the Saudi flag carrier launched under the direction of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has reached a key operational milestone with the arrival of its first three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The aircraft, configured for long-haul service, will form the backbone of the airline's initial network expansion as it targets 22 destinations by March 2027.
CEO Tony Douglas confirmed that the carrier will add Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah, and Madrid to its route map in the near term, with further city pairs to be announced. The airline is also moving forward with its previously announced London launch, now scheduled for June 2026, as part of a broader push into European and Middle Eastern markets.
Premium Onboard Experience and Technology
Douglas emphasized that Riyadh Air is differentiating itself through a premium cabin product and next-generation technology. The 787-9s are equipped with the Astra inflight entertainment system, which features high-definition OLED screens and high-speed satellite internet connectivity. "What we've got here is the world's most modern inflight entertainment system," Douglas said, underscoring the carrier's commitment to a superior passenger experience.
The airline's Sfeer mileage program offers members a best-price guarantee and complimentary WiFi, aiming to build loyalty among business and leisure travelers alike. Riyadh Air has also forged partnerships with 11 carriers, including Delta Air Lines and Singapore Airlines, to extend its network reach through codeshare and interline agreements. Notably, the airline recently signed a codeshare partnership with Air India to boost connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia, a move that aligns with the kingdom's tourism goals.
Strategic Positioning Amid Geopolitical Headwinds
Despite ongoing geopolitical challenges in the region, Douglas expressed confidence in sustained air travel demand. "The demand for air travel is relentless," he noted, pointing to the post-COVID surge in "revenge tourism" as a tailwind. Riyadh Air's central location in the Middle East provides flexibility to adjust routes as market conditions evolve, he added.
The airline has received over two million job applications, reflecting strong interest in building a diverse workforce. Douglas summarized customer feedback in a single word: "Premium." The carrier aims to deliver a warm Saudi welcome while competing with established Gulf carriers on service quality and network breadth.
For travel professionals, Riyadh Air's expansion signals new opportunities in the Saudi aviation market, which is undergoing rapid transformation under the Vision 2030 initiative. The airline's fleet growth and route additions will create additional capacity for business and leisure travel to and from the kingdom, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics in the Middle East aviation sector.
